My family has a somewhat ongoing Christmas tradition of seeing a movie on Christmas Eve. With a dearth, however, of movies that we are all willing to go see, this year we took time to knock movies off our "owned-on-DVD-but-not-watched" pile. My parents accomplished more on this front than I did, but we did watch Voyage of the Dawn Treader together.

I had my worries at the beginning that Edmund was going to repeat Peter's arc from Prince Caspian. What's interesting is that while there were similarities in their character arcs, Edmund's was sufficiently different from Peter's that I was okay with it by the end.

On the other hand, one thing that I wasn't quite happy with was how they handled Eustace's arc. The book does a decent job of, once Eustaces starts improving in personality from being the guy who constantly complains, noting that it wasn't a sudden turnaround and lets you see him doing so as a human. The movie, on the other hand, plants the bulk of his arc during his extended time as a dragon. And while there were brief possible signs of him changing before he turned into a dragon, they weren't strong enough to make Eustace "likable". At the end of the movie, my dad noted that the movie ended in such a way to leave room for another in the series with Eustace in it, but that he didn't even like Eustace still despite the character development. This doesn't surprise me, as like I noted his improved character doesn't get enough time to show that he isn't going to backslide into how he used to be.

Also, yes, I did notice the namedrop related to The Silver Chair at the end.
