I know some folks know I live in Virginia, so a few notes on my experience on today's 5.9 earthquake (it happens to be the first earthquake I've been in that I can point at as an earthquake).
Yes, I felt it. But at first, it wasn't even enough to make me think it was an earthquake. In fact, I initially thought I was just having a muscle spasm in my leg. But then it got to be more shaking than a simple muscle spasm could explain and then stopped suddenly. Nothing moved, despite things being positioned where they could fall.
Thanks to high school geology, I know that Virginia isn't exactly the most seismically active place. So upon the end of the earthquake, I decided I was going to see if I actually had just experienced an earthquake (or if it had perhaps been a big truck going by) and got confirmation off the USGS website that yes, that had been an earthquake. I also learned the last time Virginia had an earthquake around that magnitude was back in 1897...and that one happened to be closer to where I live.
