If every female gives birth to only one young, eventually they'll go extinct. Let's say there were ten, 5 females, 5 males. 5 females give birth, to 4 males and 1 female. Now you have 9 males and 1 female left. And she's going to die (and MAYBE make another female...)
In other words, the death rate is higher than the birth rate if they can only give birth to one baby.
You can take it different ways. It can mean they're going to die out and that's that or... It could mean that previously, in order to create their species in the first place, they couldn't have always been like that and it must have happened over time. Which means that over time it might change again.
Depends on whether you're a person who likes their glass half empty or half full, I guess.
