On the pillars I like to look at them from the perspective of the officers actual construction duties and compare them to human consciousness. The WM is King Solomon who was charged by God to build the temple (our higher spiritual side) SW is the foreman who oversees the actual work and pays the wages (our rational intellect) JW is the craftsman who performs the actual work. His position is the one of balance as he oversees when the sun is directly overhead thus no shadows. It is his job to balance between the high spiritual aspirations and the rational plans to make the temple a reality as well as balance between work and refreshment. (our good judgment) The North the darkest part of the lodge would represent the material world.
Those are just my own personal observations.
