OOC: twenty things

Because this is what I have been thinking about lately, so why not write it down?

1. Her mother is Polish; she entered a university in Warsaw at sixteen, and focused her studies in mobile suit engineering. She wrote a proposal for a theoretical cloaking technology and was on the verge of being recruited into the R&D sector of the military when Celestial Being approached her with the proposition of unlimited funds and a chance to join the most elite minds worldwide. She got married and had Mileina at eighteen, so basically when you think of Linda take a normal woman's 18-35 time period and squish it down into about three years.

2. Mileina is named after her maternal grandmother, Milena.

3. She knows the very basics of MS operation: she knows her way around a cockpit due to helping her father with MS construction, but while she knows which buttons to press to make the arms and legs move she has zero actual piloting experience (and her parents would like to keep it that way.)

4. Ian and Linda Vashti are codenames; Mileina, however, is just Mileina. Since she's been brought up in CB, she has no need to hide her identity.

5. She's been all starry-eyed over Tieria since she was about two years old. Tieria, even before he got all human, let her do what she liked, out of sheer bemusement over this small creature who kept drawing him pictures and giving him hugs.

6. Her birthday is June 12; she's a Gemini.

7. When she was about five and going through a "What are you doing? Why are you doing that? What's that?" stage, her father gave her an old broken communicator and a screwdriver to play with so he could maybe get half an hour of work done. When she not only took it apart but put it back together correctly, he realized that maybe they should speed up her education a little.

8. Because she's basically a mechanical genius, however, her knowledge base is very lopsided. She's excellent at math and physics, but only has very basic knowledge of biology. Her spelling is atrocious (spellcheck saves her), and although she has no trouble deciphering scientific texts, whenever she tries to write formally, she overshoots the grammar, treats it like a dartboard for commas, and ends up with something fairly strange. She has a very basic knowledge of geography-- she can find the US or Russia on a map, but not Washington DC or Moscow-- and a pretty rudimentary knowledge of history. She's basically at a college level for anything to do with engineering, and a second or third grade level for the rest.

9. Her favorite food is fresh blueberries; they can rarely get a consistent stock of fresh fruit in space, so it was always a special treat.

10. Thanks to a handy little invention known as the internet, she has about a terabyte of dramas and soap operas from around the world on her computer. If it's got a romantic plot or subplot, she'll watch it. She's only fluent in English, but thanks to subtitles she can say "I love you" in twelve languages.

11. She has absolute faith in her intuition. She also believes Michael Trinity is a kind soul deep down, and being in the same room as someone for a while means you're in love with them. Draw your own conclusions.

12. Blue Haro is currently married to Green Haro, although he's been making eyes at Red Haro lately. Meanwhile Orange Haro is mooning after Pink Haro, who's too busy with her own infatuation with Red Haro to notice. This is what happens when a little girl has robots instead of dolls, and also why the crew may notice a bit of a change in Haro vocabulary every now and then. (I can't marry you! I can't marry you!)

13. Pearl is the first friend her own age she's really ever made. There are a few other children on Lagrange, but because she's grown up with them, she didn't really have the experience of making a friend, per se-- they were just sort of automatic friends.

14. Option one: she saw from a very young age that her parents were crazy about each other, and she idolizes her parents something fierce, and that's where her obsession with everyone's lovers comes from (unconsciously)-- because they should be awesomely happy like her parents, right? Option two: kids who grow up in space turn out a little weird. (It's a bit of both.)

15. Speaking of her parents, Linda found out she was pregnant about six months after she and Ian got involved. Not only is she naturally a pretty maternal person, but she's one of those people who at some bone-deep level wants to settle down and have a family, even if she happens to be designing gigantic robots at the same time. When she told Ian she planned on having it, he proposed right there. (He was 43. The cradlerobbing jokes haven't stopped yet.)

16. It's not entirely clear even to her what she sees Tieria as. She's looked up to him for years, of course, and then during the AU virus he was something like a father. She has a strong enough bond to her own family that that part of the virus didn't stick exactly, but he still occupies some sort of paternalish area in her mind. She's not afraid to scold him during his depressive moods, however, and will basically climb on his lap and shove food in his mouth if he says he doesn't want to eat.

17. She slept with a nightlight for a few weeks after Tieria's shadow, because something about all non-essential power being cut while one of your favorite people turns into a monster and bangs on the walls makes an impression on an eleven year old.

18. Due to crew shortages and her natural aptitude, Ian is very reluctantly starting to train her for tactical support and communications. He doesn't particularly want her on the front line, especially after what happened to Chris and Lichty, so he's reasoning to himself that they need that sort of person on Lagrange as well, and besides, construction of Ptolemy II won't be completed for years. Plenty of time to find a bridge bunny who isn't your only daughter, right?

19. Her favorite colors are yellow and orange. And purple.

20. She gets paid a CB salary whenever she's helping her parents with their work, because CB laughs in the face of child labor laws. Right now her parents dole her out an allowance; they're planning on letting her access the full amount when she's a little less likely to order box sets for all her favorite shows off the internet on a whim.

21. She dresses in a mishmash of hand-me-downs, touristy clothing from the elevator shops, and whatever people bring back for her from wherever they go on Earth. She doesn't have much of a fashion sense yet, and will wear anything as long as it's brightly colored.
