Well, if you're talking about Machiavelli, then Good or Virtue is the act of pursuing one's ambition-- especially if you are a leader. This means that no matter what you may do to accomplish your goals, it is good. What some may see as an evil act is just not so because you are on your way to accomplishing your goals. For the masses (or non-leaders), virtue is a moral issue-- good and evil have an ethical bearing that can't be clearly defined by an all-consuming ambition. This is why the people will never understand the drive, motives or actions of a leader-- because they in and of themselves aren't capable of pursuing ambition for ambition's sake.

Eastern philosophies state that human nature is the root of all good. That is, if one is able to follow their feelings, then their actions cannot be evil. All men inhearantly posess a spirit which cannot stand to see injustice or suffering, so if there is suffering and injustice in the world, it comes from an outside source, not an inner source. Corruption and negative outside influences can poison the spirit and turn man against his own nature so that he enjoys the suffering of others, or at least is not compassionate anymore to the plight of others-- this is evil.

There are other philosophers who believe that stoicism is the ultimate source of good. That is, complete and impartial reason embodies all that is good, wherein human desires and feelings are inherantly evil. This pulling away from one's humanity is symbolic of distancing one's self from the Adamic nature-- the curse of Adam and Eve's sin at the creation of man. The more logical and unfeeling one can become, the closer to the sense of justice identified with God--who is inherantly the definition of good.
