It's strange, looking at fonts, noticing how I can stil easily recognize the letterforms in 99.5% of them, no effort needed (some are pretty bizarre). I know Douglas Hofstadter wrote about this in one or the other of his books. But the point is that I don't remember not being able to recognize these symbols. It's a little strange. I know I learned to read at a slightly unusual early age (ca. 2.5-3.5 years old), so maybe others do have memories of not being able to interpret the symbols of letters, but it's still kind of a queer realization, of that theoretical hole in my memory, something I can never experience with my current consciousness.
