Beach Blog Day 1

Jan 06, 2010 17:50

Likely only day I will remember to write. :)

It is very cold. It is very cold and in fact last night I awoke to discover that the heat upstairs had never been turned on, so at 5am my dreams were interrupted by the 60 degree temperature of drafty beach house. Luckily the heat kicked on well, and I woke around 10:30 to a brilliant sun greenhousing its warmth onto my shoulders.
The sky is clear; the waves are soft and subdued. My mother and I went for walk after enjoying pancakes and sausages with Dad and Ariel (who abandoned her movie and graced us with her presence at the table, an unusual occurrence, even at the beach.)
An unmolested beach is an experience you feel unworthy of witnessing. There were deer and fox prints, and birds sometimes, but nothing else, only my mother's off-gait steps from the day before, when she had walked alone. The dunes were a soft green, standing alone and tall amidst the creamy sliding sea of white sand, and the water left a film like wet glass upon the shore as it receded. We found a tidal pool skinned with ice, which is highly unusual this far south (we're just north of Myrtle Beach).
Everything was beautiful, but not everything was pleasant. Only 25 feet away from us were two dolphins, dancing in the water. I watched as the attacked a school of fish, dark sleek tails springing from the water, sharp splashes, an fish desperately leaping into the air. When everything had quieted, I watched a wave rise and thought at first that it had caught the colors of the rainbow. Then I realized its only colors were orange and dark pink. It didn't reach all the way to shore.
We found hermit crab shells and whole sand dollars and dead jelly fish like I've never seen before (we brought the shells back...not the jelly).
So it's been very relaxing so far. Mom and Dad just stepped out to watch the sun set, but I passed because it's too cold me. Also took a 2 hour nap today. Needed it. Now I think we're going to out to explore the wilds of what restaurants stay open when the tourists are gone, and hopefully find something yummy. Wish you could enjoy it with me!
