I finally got my first canvas letter for a typing position for a four-digit salary in an elementary school far outside of Ithaca that somehow is still under City of Ithaca jurisdiction. It was something like $8800 for working 19.25 hours a week for ten months of the year, but considering that I've had nothing, I might very well take that. Given that I live with my disabled mom and she does collect social security, I can live on all that combined, and it's basically what we lived on all throughout high school, but still it's appalling considering the purported average starting salary for those in my grad school was $60,000 or something (of course, two giant asterisks are necessary upon reporting this: one, that each graduating class only had 30 or so students in it, two: only those who were actually successes were likely to return the Graduate Survey; I didn't, and there were probably others in similar boats. Statistics degrees don't get you anywhere, especially if you can't afford to move out of podunks like Ithaca and into real cities.)
