The leading presidential candidate in Pakistan was assassinated today.
Benazir Bhutto wasn't the perfect leader. She had been accused of being corrupt and ineffective, but she was elected to the position of prime minister twice nevertheless. After being ousted by the current president Pervez Musharraf, she went into self-imposed exile and only recently returned to her home country. One attempt had already been made on her life in recent months and it seemed almost inevitable that she would be assassinated. But no matter how much an event seems unavoidable, it doesn't take away the sting when it actually happens. Most commentators think Pakistan will hold together, but there is talk of civil war.
Gods help us,
