Why Mormons Build Temples: LDS Response to the "Big Love" Temple Episode

Mar 13, 2009 01:41

If you've been watching the HBO Big Love saga going on (most of my Mormon friends know about thsi, and many others may have caught a word or two in the news about it) here's a YouTube response put out by the Mormon church. It's a short video and it says some good things about why we build temples and why we go.

I have been working on my own post about this topic, but I've been so pressed for time that I haven't finished yet. I wanted to hear what you have to think perhaps before I respond. Religion in general is a beautiful, fascinating, and challenging subject for any writer. I don't often get the chance to celebrate my own beliefs in writing or in conversation as much as I'd like to, even though I'm surrounded by people who share my faith. Perhaps there is far less celebration without diversity.

I'll post the video now as a sort of primer (some may not be used to the 'church video' genre, but you'll just have to smile and appreciate the lovely orchestral accompaniment without complaint). Hopefully I'll have time to finish up the post I've been drafting about Mormon temples soon - I really love this topic and I know many of my friends are probably more curious about the temple than any other aspect of my religion. I won't be able to tell you every detail, but hopefully I'll be able to describe the feelings I have when I go and why I love to be there.

I'd like to hear your thoughts, your questions, your opinions on this subject. I love liturgy, both public and private forms; I'm always looking for ways to improve my spirituality and worship. I hope all my friends feel comfortable sharing their own modes of devotion and their own thoughts on spirituality with me in comment and conversation.

But I don't have time to talk! I need sleep. Here's the video:
