I'm on episode 4 of Reborn now (I have been promised that it gets good at episode 20, and I'm determined to find out if it's worth all the hype I saw at the Artist's Alley last year) and I don't think Tsuna (main character and my second least favorite) has ever tried to do anything in his life. In fact, I'm amazed he can dress himself in the mornings. "Wow, people practice when they're on the volley ball team?! Who knew?" Not to mention his amazement at the idea of actually doing simple math. Oi. His only redeeming feature is that he's an amiable idiot, and thus perfect (I presume) for molding into exactly the kind of mafia boss the old boss wants him to be. It's not like he's ever going to have a thought of his own.

Now, how is it that such a waste of space character is only second to last in my affections? Because Reborn, the toddler hitman who's in charge of molding Tsuna into a mafia boss, is the most ridiculously annoying character I think I've ever met. And he's supposed to be funny? Haha, he popped out of a sink at school! Everyone knows sinks don't have hiding places and tunnels in them; that must be hilarious. Haha, all the girls want him for no explainable reason! He's a toddler, so that's funny! Haha, he's shooting the main cast with bullets again! They're not real bullets, just dues ex machina devices, so they're great! ::the biggest eyeroll you have ever seen::

Thank god the side characters are interesting or I'd give the whole thing up as a bad job. Of course, some of them are equally ridiculous, but at least in genuinely original ways - Lamdo, for example. And I really hope that girl who's friends with Kyoko, Tsuna's crush (the fact that he likes her should clue you in that she has all the personality of a wet rag and the brains to match) is going to be a main character, as she's the only person in show thus far to notice Tsuna's striking lack of intelligence, and she's the only girl we've met so far who isn't after one of the boys.

Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be like Dragonball Z, where Goku goes off to train somewhere for 15 episodes while all the other characters do interesting things meanwhile. Perhaps that's the big twist at episode 20? I can only hope.
