Well, I finally finished off Kobato.
So, that's the end. (Of the anime, anyway - I'm sure the manga will do something different.) Kobato was forgotten, but now she's back, and we still don't know exactly who her previous favorite person was (Her dad, who looks curiously like Fujimoto? Is this a Clamp thing now?), and Ioryogi's ending is that... he maintains the status quo. O-kay...
Yeah, it didn't feel very much like a resolution to me. It wrapped up, yes, but it wasn't satisfying on almost any count. I think the most interesting thing to come out of the revelations of the last couple episodes was that Kobato always wore a hat for good reason, and every time they had a flashback (and there were many), I found I couldn't look at anything but her head.
I started out liking Fujimoto, but by the end I was very much unimpressed with him. I hear he is different in the manga, so perhaps he's not a complete bust as a character, but between him and Sayaka (I finally learned her name) it's a close call as to which I cared about least. So him forgetting and then remembering Kobato was really lost on me, despite the fact that they even pulled the altered memories bit that always got me in Tsubasa.
But see, in Tsubasa, I think Syaoran and Sakura are absolutely adorable together, but Kobato and Fujimoto... Do they even have the slightest bit of chemistry between them? And add into that the fact that Kobato barely could figure out affection... What kind of a relationship is that going to be like? And for that matter, how is she still about whatever age she is when Fujimoto finds her again? It's been, what, five or six years? Did she get reborn as a middle-schooler? I am confused.
But! Lest you think I did not like the show, let me remind you of one very important fact: Ioryogi was in it. While I might not have cared about Fujimoto's pain (and possibly even laughed at God's little "Hey, you get her back! Haha, just kidding, now she's going somewhere else." bit with the rainbow light pillar), every time Ioryogi begged Ushagi to give Kobato just a little more time, my heart would go out to the little guy and hope maybe this time God will stop being a jerk and actually explain his plan to let everyone [eventually] be happy, but no, of course not. That would ruin the surprise.
Speaking of God being stubbornly silent about the ending, so much for my theory about when this takes place in the Clamp universe by calculating via Wish. Somehow, I think I'm actually a little sad about the idea of Shuichiro constantly getting reincarnated to meet Kohaku again. I mean, yes, it's nice that they'll always be together, but in-between Kohaku has nothing to do but either worry or else end up in cocoon again (probably the cocoon?) and everyone s/he knows is dead again, unless the angels and demons still hang out, which is unanswered by Kobato, and... Maybe I should stop thinking about it.
Oh, but then there's the question of whether or not the twins had aged during the "see what everyone's doing several years later" montage, and if not, are they robots now? And was that Touya working at Piffle Pizza? How does that even fit into the timeline? Which Clamp universe is this, anyway? Arrgh.
I'd also have thoughts about how they spent all that time trying to save the nursery only to be like "hell with it" and raze the place, but I didn't particularly care about the nursery, either. Really, my favorite parts were the heart-warming stories that sadly fell by the wayside once the plot showed up and anything and everything Ioryogi did. I like to think while he was hanging out in the garden-of-many-flowers watching over Kobato (does he get to talk to her again now that she sang a song and magically has her memories back?) Ginsei showed up and they whiled away the hours together pleasantly, most likely arguing over trival things and eating pastries.
So, in conclusion: I liked the dog. Now to get around to following the sloooow releases of the manga.
...Wait, I just remembered: they never did explain why Ioryogi was with Kobato in the first place, except that somehow he caused her death? What? Argh, confused again... You know, I didn't have nearly this many problems with Tsubasa's ending, outside of the whole "everyone else will travel while Sakura stays home" thing. Bah.
