I think the last time I fell for a character as fast and as hard as I've fallen for Wendy Watson must have been...Geoffrey in Slings and Arrows or Farscape's own Aeryn Sun. She is snarky, she is resilient, she loves with everything she has to give, she is strong and indomitable and human and she is magnificent. There's no bad here.

Middleman is an unabashedly optimistic show, but there's an underpinning of deep sadness that's just visible with Wendy's loneliness and unresolved questions surrounding her father. I wanted a song that could be both parts pensive and upbeat - ideally so I could touch upon the deeper themes and explore Wendy adjusting to a new life and discovering a purpose, but still remain faithful to the show's spirit by playing up the quirkier aspects. The hardest thing was trying to pick insanely awesome clips out of 30,000 others that were equally awesome or heartfelt.

Execution-wise it was classic editing throughout, with just straight cutting and opacity/zoom changes when necessary. The narrative is relatively straightforward and the source is already fantastic with wonderful camerawork and funky situations galore, so there was little left that needed to be fiddled with. There are a few small blips of crappy quality footage, but, believe it or not, it was the best source quality I could find. Poor tiny, neglected fandom.

Thematically, Wendy's speech from episode 11 sums it up better than I can: "You taught me there are things worth dying for. And I am so glad I got attacked by that tentacled ass-monster back at the lab, and that you framed me so I'd have to be your sidekick. Because I am so proud to be a Middleman. And proud to know you. And I want you to know, since my dad disappeared, you're the closest thing I've had to a father."

Special thanks to only_loke, my supremely excellent beta, for being just that.

Wake up and smell the coffee
Rise and shine
The early bird gets the worm
Strike while the iron's hot
And whistle while you work

Stay on the trail
Keep your hands and arms inside the train
Don't stray
Watch your step
And wipe your feet
Draw inside the lines

What if you didn't know where the bad side of town was
Where would you wander to
So many places from which to choose
Would you let yourself be

Don't cause a scene
Mind your manners
Speak only if spoken to
You know what you are not to do
Watch and learn

What if you never were short for time
All meetings canceled, clocks stopped at nine
Without alarms the silence beams
Invited to be

What if you never heard a word they say
And up were down and night were day
I bet you'd have a lot more time to play
If you'd let yourself go

Breath deep
Speak out
Make up your mind
Be brave
Follow your dreams
Listen to your heart
Close your eyes
Make a wish
