As you may or may not know, I received a copy of Super Mario 3D Land for Christmas. This game and I have been in a love hate relationship. I blazed through the main game and died maybe once. As I watched the credits after saving Peach I felt pretty dissatisfied. The game was far too easy. After finishing the credits I noticed I had unlocked some "special" levels. At first, I was very pleased with these levels. They were significantly more difficult and I actually died multiple times trying to clear some of them. As you can probably guess, my pleasure quickly turned into torment. Many of these levels were near impossible without two Tanooki suits. I found myself constantly returning to World 1-1 to stock up on Tanooki suits in order to clear some of these special levels. Overall, I absolutely loved the level design of both the main game levels and the special levels, but the difficulty is crazy. It went from unbelievably easy to incredibly difficult in the blink of an eye. While I did greatly enjoy the game, I really hope Nintendo does not make this mistake again in future Mario games.
