HOPELESSLY ROMANTIC

Jared was never going to be a hearts and flowers type of guy. Jensen knew that. He never expected candle-lit dinners, dates at the movies, a good morning kiss that was purely to say 'good morning, and I love you' and not to lead into something else. Jensen thought that he was the only one out of the pair of them with the ability to actually be romantic. Occasionally, he'd wake up thinking that maybe Jared didn't do any of those things because he just didn't feel that way, but warm hands and a soft mouth normally distracted him from such a train of thought. Usually, but not today.

Jared wasn't in bed when he woke up, which was unusual. Especially on a Saturday. Jensen couldn't hear him down below, either, but he rolled out of bed to go take a look anyway. He climbed down to the ground and called Jared's name, expecting maybe to hear him answer from inside the house. Except there was no reply.

Frowning, Jensen pulled his jeans on and fastened them as he went into the house. And stopped short. There on the table was a shiny black bike helmet - not new, but certainly newly retouched and shined up - and on the back of it was painted a copy of Jensen's first tattoo, the pair of macaws. There was a post-it note stuck to the visor which simply said, 'For Jen'.

Jensen picked it up in both hands, rubbing his fingers over the hard shell of carbon fiber. As he did he saw that a folded note had been hidden underneath it. He flattened it out. 'Come outside.' He looked up, moving toward the kitchen window, and saw Jared outside, watching the front of the house expectantly. He was sat by his bike, legs out in front of him and knees bent, and he lifted a hand and waved when he saw Jensen looking. Then he beckoned him out and Jensen tugged his boots on before he hurried back to the garage with the helmet in one hand, to grab a teeshirt and his leather jacket before going out. He pulled the shirt on just beyond the door, leaving the helmet on the step, and then shrugged into the jacket while Jared got to his feet.

"Ready to go for a ride?" He asked, and Jensen noticed the helmet in his hands, now sporting a tiger across the back, bright and fierce.

"Where are we going?" Jensen asked.

"It's a surprise."

"Like the helmet? Which, by the way, looks awesome. But you're months off my birthday."

"Doesn't have to be your birthday for this. C'mon. Let's move."

Jensen picked up his helmet and put it on, pulling the chin strap tight as Jared did the same.

He hadn't really known what to expect. Thought maybe they'd ride a short while and Jared would take him out somewhere for breakfast. Some gesture that only Jensen's imagination would turn into a romantic one because, as he well knew, that just wasn't Jared's style. But Jared took the bike out towards the highway, and didn't stop before they reached it. They stayed on it a while, then veered off onto a less-used road and Jensen felt that same thrill as he had done the night they'd gone to Mickey's. He squeezed his hands at Jared's waist, tightening his grip and leaning as close as he could as Jared kicked the bike's power up as much as he could handle.

They rode long, straight roads for hours, stopping at midday to refuel both themselves and the bike. Jensen paid for the sandwiches, and the fuel, while Jared scratched the back of his head and tried to look sheepish. He failed, but it didn't matter. They sat on the grass between the island of pumps and the road to eat and Jensen took off his jacket and let the cold air cool his skin. Jared leaned across when he was done eating, planted a messy kiss on Jensen's cheek.

"Thanks for lunch."

"Thanks for the ride," Jensen returned.

"Ain't done yet. We got a little way to go, then we can turn around and loop back. Need to be back before dark so's I can show you something."

"Show me what?"

"Patience, Jensen. Got some riding to do first."

By the time they got back to the house, the sky was just turning a dusky dark blue. Jared flashed the bike's lights at the front window as he pulled into the drive, to let Jeff know they were home. They got the bike rolled back into the garage and took off their helmets. Jensen's legs felt weird, like he was still on the bike. His ass was kind of numb from the vibrations of the bike's engines, too, and Jared told him cheekily that he'd rub some feeling back into it once they were in bed. But they weren't going just yet.

He led Jensen into the house and upstairs, Jeff murmuring a hello from the couch as they passed him. Upstairs, Jared took Jensen into the spare room and opened up the window there. Cold, crisp air rushed into the room and Jensen shivered with it. Jared turned to him, held out a hand, and said, "come on.."

They climbed out of the window and Jensen found himself on the flat roof of the garage. Jared encouraged him to sit down and he did, crossing his legs in front of him until Jared tutted at him and told him, not like that. He sat behind Jensen and pulled the other man up against him, rested his head on Jensen's shoulder. They stayed there, like that, another hour, and Jensen didn't take long to realize why. As they sat there, as the sky changed from that dusk blue to the dark grey of night, the lights of the town started coming on. From this vantage point, since one side of Jared's street was a little higher than the other, they could see over a lot of houses. Jensen followed the progress of the streetlights and house-lights as closely as he could, little dots dancing in his vision whenever he closed his eyes.

"This is beautiful," he sighed, and Jared's arms tightened around him.

"I know. Perfect end to the day, right?"

"Yeah. It is," Jensen agreed. "The ride was great."

"Sometimes it's good just to get out and get some road beneath you. Some miles behind you. We should do it again soon."

Jensen turned slightly, reaching for Jared's mouth with his own. He'd actually made the romantic gesture that Jensen had wanted, even though to him, it had just been a normal day. That he had shared it was proof enough that he loved Jensen, and that was all the younger man needed to know. The kiss he gave Jared in return was a 'good night, and I love you'.
