SPIRIT DAY

Hannah watched her Papa Jeff rooting through her suitcase, while Daddy stood in the doorway and insisted he'd packed purple ribbons. She didn't know why they needed them when she had perfectly good pink ribbons right there in plain view, but Holly had in purple ribbons today and she'd said it was important. Matty wore his purple sneakers and both her daddies were wearing purple t-shirts. Then Dad was there, the purple ribbons clutched in one hand.

"Found 'em," he said. "They were in your case, Jensen."

"Oops."

"Hannah, come on downstairs and let's get your hair into pigtails."

Hannah jumped down from the bed and took her Dad's hand and they went down to the kitchen. Holly and Matty were sitting on the couch down there, both ready to go out, and Corey was running around the furniture making noises, like he seemed to love doing. Hannah sat at the kitchen table and stayed still while Dad fixed up her hair. He was good at it now, better than he used to be. Still not as good as Gran'ma Stevie, though.

"Okay, are we all ready to go?" Daddy asked.

"Where're we going?" Hannah wanted to know.

"The kite fair, like we said yesterday."

"Is it a purple kite?"

Daddy smiled, looking over at Papa Jeff and then back to her. "I guess you want to know why it's so important that we all wear this color today?" he asked. She nodded and he pulled back the chair opposite her at the table and sat down. She felt her Dad's hands come down on her shoulders and squeeze gently. "It's because not everybody is as lucky as us."

"You know the rainbow that we have on the refrigerator at home?" Dad asked her, and she turned her head, craning to look at him. "Well that's like...a symbol for us."

"It's a pride flag," Matty interjected, and Daddy looked over at him in surprise. Hannah just looked even more puzzled, but Dad continued.

"It's for...two daddies. Or two mommies. Today is Spirit Day, and the color purple in the rainbow means spirit. To have a strong spirit is important, banana. It means that even if someone isn't as lucky as me and Daddy to have a family that accept us, maybe if they have someone that calls them a bad name like that girl at your school called us, that if they have a strong spirit then they'll know that it won't always be that way. That they'll find acceptance somewhere and somehow and they'll find the strength to be themselves."

Hannah thought she got it. She nodded, and Dad patted her shoulder.

"Okay, banana, we'd better get moving if we're going to catch the fifty-kite flight."

She got down from her chair and took his hand, watched Holly and Matty jump off the couch and race each other to the door. As they went outside and started the walk towards the football stadium where the event was being held, Hannah tugged on her Dad's hand hard to make him look down at her.

"Dad?"

"What's up, Hannah?" he asked.

"Can't we just wear purple every day?"
