WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS (PART THREE) - HOME SWEET HOME

The remaining time in London was spent, mostly, inside their hotel room. After dragging Jared, drunk and irritating, back to the hotel, Jensen had decided that life was less dangerous if they stayed in. Jared was easy to persuade of that fact, of course, and if they needed more condoms then it was Jensen who ran out to get them. It saved them a lot of money, but they both agreed that they would come back one day and see more of the place.

The flight home was uneventful too. They hadn't managed to get anything earlier than they'd been told and they left Heathrow in the middle of the day almost a week after their Vegas wedding. Chris was the only one that Jensen had trusted with their flight details. He didn't want Jeff and Stevie to come and pick them up. He didn't think he could endure that particular humiliation just yet and Jared would have to be awake to prepare himself for whatever Jeff had in store for him.

Chris picked them and their small backpack of new clothes up in the scorching heat of a Saturday afternoon, Jensen taking the passenger seat in front and Jared stretching out on the bench seat behind them both with an arm flung over his face. They didn't talk too much. Chris left the radio on and concentrated on driving and Jensen waited for his itch to say something to get too much for him to ignore. It wasn't until they stopped for a red light that Chris made a move. He took his cellphone from his shirt pocket and rested it in the well on the dash, pressing a couple of keys and turning the radio off so that they could hear the message being played.

There was noisy, thumping music, and someone trying vainly to shush it between laughing and hiccuping. Apparently it was Jensen, because in the next moment his voice came out of the phone's small speakers, slurring and too loud.

"Christian! Chri..issss. Listen to me, man. I'm in... I'm Vegas. Holy shit, and I got married. T'Jay." There was an explosive giggle and Jensen sank down into his seat, his cheeks burning. "We got a huh-honey... Thing. A moon. An', an' I miss ya. Fuck. I love ya, man." A loud belch, then the dial-tone. Chris clicked the phone off just as he started moving again and glanced across at Jensen.

"So. You had a good time in Vegas then?"

"I'm never gonna hear the end of this, am I?"

Chris shook his head. "You have no idea."

As he pulled into their street a while later, it was plain what he had meant. The road outside Jeff's house was lined with cars and bikes and there were people spilling out of the house and into the front yard. A barbecue had been lit, and there were balloons and banners everywhere, congratulating the happy couple. Jensen stared across at Chris who just shrugged and said there was no way he could keep it a secret. Hiding his face, Jensen tried to sink even further into his seat as Chris brought the truck to a stop a short way from the house. He could hear the shouts and the whoops from there.

"What's going on?" Jared asked, just sitting up. He'd fallen asleep during the trip from the airport and when he saw the people outside the house he rolled his eyes. "Oh, fuck no."

"This is your fault," Jensen told him, turning in his seat to look at Jared. "You can go first." Before Jared could argue, Chris was out of the truck and opening the back door for him. Jeff approached, a wide smile on his face that made him look a lot younger and a lot more mischievous than it should have. Stevie stayed with Trevor and the barbecue, watching Maya and Shelby run around them in the hopes of some dropped food.

"Congratulations, boys. Thought we'd throw a little party since we didn't get to come to the big day."

Jared pointed a finger at him as he slid out of the truck. "You're a dick," he informed Jeff. "You all are."

"Just wanted to show you how happy we are for you, son. So who wore the dress?"

Jensen's mother was approaching now, tugging Rock along with her. She came round to the passenger side window and tapped on it until Jensen uncovered his face and sat up, ready to face the music. He opened the door and she stepped back, greeting him with a warm hug as soon as he had his feet on the ground.

"We're so pleased for you, baby!" Donna told him, kissing him on his cheek. "We just wish you'd waited until we all could have been there, but-"

"Mom, it doesn't really count okay?"

"Oh, yes it does. How was the honeymoon? Tell us everything!"

The whole afternoon went pretty much the same way, with friends and family demanding details, offering congratulations and warnings over the dangers of alcohol and recounting their own wedding stories. Jensen and Jared dealt with it the only way they knew they could - they tried to hide as often as possible.

Jeff packed them both into a taxi once the party had wound down and they shared a few surreptitious kisses in the back seat on their way home. They were tired, well-fed, wound up from the day's events. When they got home, they went straight to the bathroom and Jared set the shower going while Jensen started stripping off.

"We could just never speak to them again," he said, as he stepped into the shower with Jensen and grabbed the shower gel.

"I think they just thought it was funny," was the response. "I guess it is, from their point of view."

Jared poured out a generous handful of the gel and quickly began rubbing it into Jensen's shoulders. "What about your point of view? You still pissed?"

Jensen just groaned in response, enjoying the feel of Jared's hands on his skin. He brought his arms up, held his boyfriend's fingers in place and turned his head so that they could share a kiss. He wasn't upset about it any more. There was no point, he thought. It was done, they couldn't take it back. It wasn't ideal, but at least now he didn't have to keep asking. He let Jared continue his soapy-handed massage in relative silence, unsurprised when the other man eventually wrapped his hand around Jensen's cock and started slowly jacking it. He hummed loudly, settling back against the body behind his. Closing his eyes, he tilted his head back slightly and let the spray hit his face.

"Christ, you're beautiful," Jared told him, the warmth of his voice cutting through the dampness on Jensen's cheek. He picked up the pace, wanting Jensen to come. Wanting to drag him from the shower and leave a watery trail to the bedroom, to the bed.

"Wake up."

Jared rolled over, groaning, and cracked an eye open. "Dude, fuck off."

"I'll forgive that this once. I've got to go."

"Mm..Where?"

"The hospital. Some of us still have to go out and learn and earn a living. Your turn later."

Jared muttered something obscene. He'd forgotten that he wasn't still on vacation. Jensen leaned over him and kissed him and that was when he opened his eyes completely and realised that the man was fully dressed. "Ugh, you're ready already?"

"Mm-hmm. Guess you didn't wear me out quite enough last night." Jensen kissed him again. "Try harder next time."

"Yeah, yeah," Jared said, waving him off. "I'll see you later, wife."

Jensen, already halfway out of the door, just flipped him off over one shoulder for that remark and continued on his way. With the quiet that came as he left, Jared felt unable to sleep. It was too peaceful in the house and too empty in the bed, so he forced himself up and to the bathroom where he relieved himself and took a shower. Once dressed, he called Stevie and asked if she could bring Maya over. She told him no problem, she would drop the dog off on her way out shopping, and he set about making himself some breakfast while he waited. He hoped she'd have a few minutes to spare while she was here, too, knew that she would if he asked. He needed to talk to somebody about the idea he'd had last night and she was less likely to make fun of him for it than Jeff was.

Sure enough, she arrived early. She let Maya in the house ahead of her, and had Corey in one arm while Holly held her free hand. Holly let go as soon as she saw Jared and he picked her up in both arms before she even asked, kissing her cheek noisily. She rolled her eyes at him, but didn't scream to be put down again.

"I was hoping you wouldn't mind looking after this pair for me, just for the morning. The school holidays are kind of taking their toll now."

Jared chuckled, but nodded. "Of course I don't mind. They can help me clean out a week's worth of build-up in our refrigerator. And then maybe I'll take them grocery shopping too."

"Thank you, sweetie," Stevie said, moving further inside to set Corey down on one of the chairs in the lounge. Holly scrambled down from Jared's arms and went to sit with her brother, to watch him. "I'll come back this afternoon for them both."

"Take your time. No sweat," Jared told her. "Jensen should be back by three, he usually has a short day on Mondays. No practical stuff. He can help me fix them dinner before I have to go to work."

"Are you sure? I don't want to-"

"Stevie, I'm sure. He won't mind. We'll look after them until tonight and you can relax and have a day to yourself. You just looked after our dog for a whole week. It's not a problem."

"I appreciate that."

"Before you go... Can I ask you something? I just want you to tell me if it's a dumb idea, because right about now I don't know how Jensen would react to it, but.."

"What is it, Jay?"

"This whole marriage thing. Well. Commitment ceremony. It's not the way he wanted it to happen. That much is obvious. I mean, we were both really drunk. Can barely remember it."

"And?"

"I was thinking of.." Jared sighed, ran a hand through his hair. "I thought maybe I could organise it so we could do it properly. Sober. With everybody there."

Stevie smiled so hard at him then he thought there was something wrong with her. "Oh, Jared... I think that's a wonderful idea."

"You don't think it would just make it worse?"

She shook her head firmly. "Absolutely not. I think Jensen would be very happy if you did that for him. I take it that you don't want him to find out beforehand?"

"I think it'd be better if it was a surprise. Can you help me out?"

"When do you want to do it?"

"Soon. This weekend if we can."

"I'll speak to Donna when I get back home. We'll call around for you and see what we can get hold of."

Jensen was slightly surprised to find that he didn't have Jared to himself when he returned home, but not too bothered. He gave both children a quick hug then headed upstairs to get himself showered and changed, out of his work clothes. He'd been in a stuffy lecture hall since lunchtime and he felt uncomfortably sweaty. Jared joined him as he was getting dressed again, gave him a brief kiss and told him that Holly and Corey were playing in the yard with Maya while he was up here.

"You want to order in or should we cook them something?"

Jensen poked Jared in the chest, shaking his head. "You should go fetch some food. We have nothing in the house."

"Wrong. I took the kids out shopping this afternoon. We are fully stocked up again."

"Then cook something. We're not ordering in for a year. I have credit card bills to pay, somehow."

Jared rolled his eyes. "I said I'd help. What's mine is yours, you know. For richer and poorer and all that jazz."

"You got a spare few thousand tucked away, have you?"

Jared dug into his pocket, pulled out a set of keys. "I will have."

Jensen examined the keys in his hand, incredulous. "You're going to sell your bike?"

Jared shrugged. "I already spoke to someone down the dealer's I use. Said he'd give me two and a half for it, and some old piece of junk he's got that I can fix up. See? I had a pretty productive day, really."

"Didn't you just," Jensen said, his voice soft. "Thank you. You don't have to do it. We can find the-"

He was cut off with another kiss. "I'm already doing it, so shut up. You've got more important things to worry about." Jared's eyes fluttered closed as Jensen's hand came around the back of his neck and pulled him down until they were nose to nose.

"I love you."

"Mm, love you too. Now get dressed because I have to get back down there before they ruin our yard."

When Jensen got back downstairs, he was unsurprised to find Jared huddled around the kitchen table with the kids, a Pizza Hut menu open in front of them. Figuring it would be easier not to argue against it, and suddenly craving pizza as soon as he saw the menu, Jensen said nothing as he sat down with them and watched them debate over what toppings they should get.

"You want your usual, Jen?"

"Are you sure Stevie's not going to mind that we're feeding her poor kids junk?"

Jared smirked. "Hey, if I can't treat my little sister and kid brother to pizza now and again, then what sort of a guy does that make me? Anchovies or no?"

"No!" Holly squealed, scrunching up her nose in disgust. "Yuck!"

"Okay, okay, no anchovies. Jeez. What do you want on your pizza, little miss fussypants?"

His question was followed by the inevitable tongue poking out and then Holly's drawn out, "Jen-seeeeen." Jensen sighed. It was going to be a long evening.

In some ways, the walk had done him good. They lived quite a ways away from the hospital, and it gave him time to clear his head. He had been called in after work to assist in the emergency room. The kid that had been brought in had tumbled head-first through a plate-glass window. Shards of glass were embedded in his face and neck. He'd lost one of his eyes, and his jugular had been nicked, but Jensen and the other doctor, Mark Hillard, had worked hard for hours upon end. By the time they were done they were just as bloody as the boy had been, but all of the glass rattled in a tin bowl at their side.

The cool air, the sound of life on the streets, and the crickets in the background -- all of that had done his mind and body good. He walked until he felt he couldn't anymore, about three-fourths of the way home, and then hailed a cab. He rode home, listening to the cabby bitch about baseball and the weather.

Finally at home, he paid the driver and slumped up the walkway. With his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, Jensen dug into his pockets for his keys. The place was dark, but Jared wasn't due to go to work for at least another hour, he thought. Maybe he got called in too.

There would be a note. That's what Jensen knew when he slipped into the house, closing the door behind him. Maya met him just inside, wagging her tail and snuffling around for treats and attention. He cooed at her, ruffling up her fur for a minute before he set his keys on the counter and shrugged his bag off his shoulder. He flipped on the lights over the stove, not wanting the harsh fluorescent lights from above. He saw the note tacked to the refrigerator with a Harley Davidson magnet. He read it through bleary, tired eyes, and winced. It wasn't what he wanted to hear.

"Goddamnit, Jay," he breathed. He pushed away from the stove, swiping up his keys once more. "Come on, Maya," he called to the dog. "Let's walk up to Grandpa's."

Maya squeezed out of the door before Jensen even had it open all the way. She knew "Grandpa's" house meant playtime with Shelby and Holly. Corey was still too young, but she knew Holly always gave them snacks of stuff she wasn't supposed to. Yummy stuff, like her unfinished hot dogs and the skin off her chicken.

"Maya..." Jensen called. He watched her bound ahead, pause long enough to pee, and then head off in the general direction of Jeff and Stevie's house. When she got too far, she would hear Jensen call to her. She'd run back to him, circle around him a couple of times, and then head back down the deserted walk.

Since he was already tired, the walk took Jensen a half-hour, rather than the usual fifteen minutes when he was in full exercise-mode. There were a good number of cars and bikes outside of Jeff's house. Jensen sighed, not wanting to be at a party. He wanted to go home, get into his sweats, and curl up beside Jared to wait out the rest of the day. Music could be heard in the backyard, and there was an orange glow seeping from behind the fenced yard. Jensen let himself and Maya inside the gate, and headed around to the back.

Someone had made a fire in the barbecue pit by the picnic table. Holly and some other kids, ones that Jensen recognized as belonging to Jeff's friends, were toasting marshmallows. Kenzie was sitting at the picnic table with graham crackers and Hershey's chocolate bars at the ready. It was a S'mores night, apparently.

Chairs were set out upon the lawn, mostly filled, and the beer was free-flowing. Another table had food on it; hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, salsa, bread, and some containers of purple and red drinks for the kids. Jensen watched Maya and Shelby run around the yard at full-tilt, until they realized people were eating. Then they picked out the first person they thought they could swindle out of some food and made a beeline for them.

"Fuck, you're late."

Blinking heavily, Jensen turned and found Jared before him. "Yeah," he said. "I got called into the ER."

"Everything okay?"

One of the worst parts of Jensen's job was losing someone. It always made him feel inadequate when that happened, even though he was told repeatedly that you can't save everyone. "Yeah," he nodded. "Kid fell through a plate-glass window."

"Ouch."

"Yeah, he's a mess, but he'll survive. I thought you had work tonight?"

"Mickey said I could take the night off." Jared reached out, a bottle of beer in both hands. He wrapped one arm around Jensen's shoulders and pulled him in closer, pressing a kiss to the side of the man's head. After that, he handed him one of the open beers. They clinked the glass together and then each took a swig. Jensen's was a bit longer than Jared's, and he belched afterwards, but he felt better at least.

"So, what's going on?" Jensen asked. "Why'd you tell me to come out here?"

Jared motioned to the crowd of people in the backyard. "It's a party, dude."

"Yeah, and I'm not feeling particularly festive," Jensen reminded him. "I'm tired as fuck and I want to go home."

"Well, you can't just yet."

Grumbling, Jensen's head fell back for a moment as he sighed.

"Come on," Jared encouraged. "Just a little longer. Go grab a burger, and let me do a few more things, and we'll get ready to go."

Jensen watched him go, moving closer to Stevie, who was out by the trellis where her and Jeff had spoken their vows. Thousands of tiny twinkle lights graced the wooden structure, hazed by a swath or two of flowy, white netting. Heaving another sigh, Jensen hauled himself over to the food table. He doctored himself up a burger and a hot dog, piled some chips on the plate too, and moved over to the picnic table where his sisters were.

"Hi, Jen," Kenzie smiled sweetly. "Wow, you're late."

He found it odd that she noted the same thing that Jared had, but shrugged his shoulders and nodded. "I know," he said. "I got called into the ER to help out."

"Aw, I hope it all worked out."

Chewing a mouthful of burger, he nodded. "Yeah," he agreed. "But, fuck, I'm tired."

"Well, not too much longer before you can go home, eh?"

He looked at her, shaking his head. "Do I have a specific time I have to go?"

Kenzie looked momentarily frightened. Her eyes widened and she pasted a fake smile to her face. "Wha--no," she stammered. "I just, I'm only saying..."

"Kenzie, help!"

Seemingly saved by the bell Kenzie turned away, towards Holly's call. She saw that the little girl was about to lose her blackened marshmallow to the depths of marshmallow hell, and quickly moved the stick over to the table, catching the gooey, melted marshmallow on a plate. She scooped it up on a graham cracker and set a few squares of chocolate over top. She handed the other half of the cracker to Holly, knowing the little girl liked to squash the marshmallow and chocolate, until it was a melty, sticky, gooey mess. With a giggle and a grin, she bit into it.

"Hey," Jensen said to her. "Make me one of those."

"Want it burnt?" Holly asked.

"Is there any other way?" he teased.

After another bite of her own S'more, Holly set to putting two more marshmallows on her stick. Some of the other kids were done with theirs, and came to Kenzie for help assembling the treats. Jensen watched her, smiling as he did, chuckling and helping out here and there.

"Hey, everybody!"

Interrupted, Jensen turned, seeing Jared out by the trellis. Sometime, at some point during Jensen's meal, Jared had set up a microphone. It was just one he could hold onto, but Jensen wondered how he had missed that happening. Jared waited until everyone had quieted, the music turned down just slightly, and smiled at them all. Jensen furrowed his brow in curiosity.

"I want to thank everyone for coming out tonight," Jared continued. "I know this was short notice."

Jensen looked at his sister. "What's going on?" he asked, his voice just a whisper.

"Wait and see," she said back, just as quietly.

"Jensen, if you could come up here?"

Oh, fucking hell, Jensen thought silently. Sighing, he got up from the picnic table and headed over to the trellis. He waited by the two stairs, but Jared waved him up to the deck. Grumbling under his breath, he moved up the steps, ignoring Jared's crack about how he needed to stop complaining about his long-ass day.

"Alright," Jared finally said, happy with Jensen settled next to him. "As you know, Jen and I went and got drunk last week, and did something slightly stupid."

"Slightly?" someone called from the crowds.

"Slightly," Jared grinned and nodded. "We got drunk, got married, and got lost. In that order."

"Good thing you can't get pregnant, too."

Jensen poked a finger at the jeering biker, named Tim or Tom, Jensen couldn't remember. "But, we didn't like how it all went down, no matter how completely fucking romantic you guys think it was." He smiled at some of the snickers in the crowd. "So, tonight, we're going to replay it. And do it fucking right."

Exhausted, Jensen blinked his eyes, slowly, as he looked at Jared. "We're what?"

Jared turned to look at Jensen, the microphone in his hand. "Alright, so, here goes," he said, sort of mumbling into the mic. He dug into his pockets, looking for the scrap of paper he had stowed there. "I have vows here somewhere."

"You..." Stunned, Jensen had to pause for a moment. "You fucking wrote vows?"

Jared nodded, locating the piece of paper. "Yes, I fucking wrote vows," he repeated into the mic so everyone could hear what Jensen had said. He held the paper up to the dim light coming from the strung Christmas bulbs and cleared his throat. "Ready?"

"For Chrissake," Jeffrey complained. "Get on with it, boy."

Everyone laughed, making Jared clear his throat again. "Alright," he repeated. He was nervous, Jensen could tell that now that he was really studying Jared. "Alright, here goes." Jared took a deep breath and read from the paper he had in his hands. "Jensen," he said, glancing from the paper up to the man before him. "I am an asshole."

Jensen didn't even really hear everyone else laughing at the obvious declaration. He was too busy watching Jared, amazed that the man was actually nervous. I already married you, you freak, he wanted to say. Why are you so nervous?

"I will always be an asshole," Jared continued. "You learn what you live." At that comment, he turned his gaze to the crowd, quickly finding where Jeffrey had planted himself, bouncing Corey on his knee.

"Hey," Jeff complained, pointing a warning finger at Jared.

Turning back to Jensen, Jared looked at him for a second before he continued to read off of his paper. "I am an asshole," he said again. "And I apologize to you, in advance, for the things I have and will put you through."

Jensen grinned, feeling much less tired than he had before. His heart pounded in his chest, swelling with pride and love.

"But I promise you, with everything I have, that I will always love you and be there for you."

Jensen smiled again, gratefully, as he watched Jared crumple the paper.

"And I knew you wouldn't have written any vows, so I wrote some for you."

"You wrote some for me?" Jensen laughed. He took the other paper that Jared produced from his back jean pocket and then snagged the mic from him. "I'm not good at public speaking, but -- oh, God -- here goes." He read aloud what Jared had written on the paper. "Jared. How can I possibly tell you how hot I am for you and your unbelievably amazing body?" He laughed, as did the crowd before them, and kept reading. "You are as beautiful as the winter's morn, with the sun glinting off of your perfect ass...You know what? I think I'm done." He crumpled the paper up, laughing, and leaned into Jared.

Jared wrapped his arms around Jensen and pulled him up against his body, kissing him deeply. The crowd cheered, whooping and throwing handfuls of birdseed in the air, at them. Jared pulled back just enough to look into Jensen's eyes, and then kissed him again, his arms curled tightly around him.

"Don't know what I'd do without you," he whispered, as they parted, the mic too far from him now to pick it up.

"Don't worry about it," Jensen replied, just as quiet. "I ain't going anywhere."
