CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
It had been a couple of weeks since their fight over Phin and Chris. The bar was looking better each time Jensen went out there, which seemed to be most nights when he got in from school and found that Jared wasn't home. His days got longer the closer they got to Hallowe'en, with studying and hanging out with Chris and going to see Jared at the bar. He spent most of the weekend with Stevie, helping her out with Holly while Jeff was over at Mickey's. It was good for him to be there, to have her to talk to. She seemed to know already what might be wrong with him and she didn't push him to talk about any subject that he didn't want to.
Phin was one of those subjects. Jared must have said something, since Phin had actually said hello the last time Jensen had seen him. It made him uncomfortable to think that his boyfriend had mentioned Jensen's concerns, but he didn't say anything about it. They'd been doing okay. He didn't want another fight. He felt bad enough still about the last one.
Stevie was asleep on the chair opposite where he sat, Holly in his arms, when the phone rang and startled them all. He shifted Holly carefully and reached across for the handset, answering quietly. It was Jared and the first thing he asked was whether he'd woken them up.
"Just Stevie. What's going on?"
"We'll be home early today. Some idiot cut the power while we were working. It's okay, we're way ahead. Just annoying. Listen, Jeff said we're going out for dinner, so can you let Stevie know? We should be back in about an hour."
"Sure, sounds good."
"How's the studying going?"
"I'm all done. For today, at least. I've missed you Jay."
"Missed you too. You can have me plenty when we get home tonight."
"Is Phin coming along?" Jensen asked.
There was a pause and Jensen wondered if maybe he'd pissed Jared off again. But then his voice came back on the line. "No. He's staying at Mickey's now. I guess his Dad's too busy with your Mom."
Jensen felt a mix of relief and slightly sick at that statement. He was glad that Phin wouldn't be there, because he definitely didn't need that competition for Jared's attention tonight. But being reminded that his mom and Rock were close enough that there was the possibility that he and Phin could end up related, that made him feel strange in a way he didn't like. He knew he couldn't do anything about it, though. He certainly hadn't voiced his concerns to his mom. She was happy again. He couldn't act the spoiled son and ruin that. Alan had effectively left them all alone for almost a month now and Jensen didn't want to give him any reason to start bothering her.
"See you soon." Jared's voice jolted him back out of his thoughts and he said goodbye, hung up the phone. Holly had woken up, but was just reaching for his face quietly. Not crying. He held his finger out to her, watched her small hands wrap around it. She was so sweet sometimes, it made his heart ache. She made him wonder if he and Jared would ever get to a stage where they might think about a family.
"You're looking very serious there," Stevie said. He'd forgotten that she had woken up. He smiled across at her and nodded.
"I guess I am. You know something? Me and Jared, it's been over a year."
"Really? Did you-"
"No," Jensen said, shrugging. "We've both been too busy to do anything about it. Probably too busy to even notice. But it feels pretty good, knowing we've lasted that long. We've got, what, just a couple months until our second Christmas together? I'm starting to think that maybe this is 'it'. Maybe he's meant to be my first and my last."
Stevie's eyes crinkled at the corners as she grinned. "I really hope so. I know it doesn't seem like it all the time to you, but for the people who know you, who are looking in all the time, you're a perfect couple."
"Oh, you're right. Definitely not perfect all the time." Jensen thought of all the times that it had been far from perfect. Jared's stint in jail, his trying to make Jensen stay away from him when he got back out. Every time they'd fought over stupid things, insignificant things, and really big things. But there were all the times when he wondered how he'd got so lucky. Jared being there for him every time he'd felt beaten down by Doug at school, or by his own father. The sex almost every night that still felt exciting, even now. That was never a chore. "I guess if it was perfect all the time then it wouldn't have lasted as well as it has."
"You're right. Exactly right. Me and Jeff have never been completely perfect. I've definitely had my moments and I've wondered afterwards why he still comes back. But then I guess he has nowhere better to go."
Jensen frowned. "You mean nowhere better than you, period."
Stevie blushed at the compliment. "You have to be the sweetest boy I know," she said, winking at him. "And what did Jared want, anyway?"
"He said Jeff's taking us out for dinner. All four of us."
"I guess I'd better go get ready, then. Are you okay with Holly while-"
"I'm fine," Jensen interrupted. "If she starts crying for her mommy, you'll hear her."
"Oh, I will." Stevie got up, heading towards the stairs. She touched Jensen's shoulder as she went past him. "Thanks for coming over today, Jensen. I really appreciate the help."
"What else is her godfather for?" He asked, leaning his head back to look Stevie in the eye. She ruffled his hair, agreeing.
It felt a little bit like old times as they sat down together at Jeff's favorite table in Galileo's. Jensen had been here only once before with him and Jared, but this place was so welcoming that it felt familiar. He sat next to Jared, with Holly's carry-cot on the other side of him, and Jeff and Stevie were opposite them. They had all cleaned up and smartened up a little bit before coming out and it felt good to be here and forgetting about everything else that they had on their plates. Jensen didn't even think once about Coulter and the rest of his gang, currently penned up in jail waiting for the trial date. Jared had finally been told that it would be during the first week of November when it would start, and he was excited and nervous about the whole thing. He played up to Jensen that he was fine about it, of course, but Jensen knew him well enough to know he was worried.
He looked far from worried right now, though. Probably wasn't even thinking about it as he took a short drink of his beer and laughed as Jeff told them about why the power had gone off at Mickey's. Jensen leaned into his shoulder and felt himself go warm inside when Jared's arm reflexively came around his shoulders and squeezed him.
"Don't go getting all relaxed," Jared told him. "I thought we had plans for later."
"I won't. I'll wake up for later, I promise."
Stevie picked up her glass of wine and nudged Jeff gently in the ribs. "Jensen was telling me that he and Jared have been together for over a year now. Which I think means we have some kind of anniversary coming up too."
Jeff laughed. "Oh, I hadn't forgotten, honey. I've got plans."
"Hmm, knew there was a reason I married you. I mean, other than your good looks."
"And the fact that he got you pregnant before you could blink," Jared interjected.
"That too," Stevie said, smiling as Jeff tried to protest. "All in all, I'm glad everything happened the way that it did."
Jensen raised his bottle. "Hear, hear! I don't think I would have wanted it any other way. Well, maybe some of it, but mostly not."
"That reminds me," Jared said, and Jensen prepared himself for something completely unrelated. He was right, too. "You still got your New Year's costume?"
"Yes, why?"
Jared didn't answer, just smiled secretively.
"Jay, why? We don't have a Hallowe'en party to go to. And New Year's is a way aways yet."
"You'll find out."
Jensen gave up, knowing he wouldn't get a straight answer out of his boyfriend. He'd find out at the last minute, no doubt, when it was too late to back out of whatever Jared had planned. He supposed it didn't matter. If Jared wanted him to dress up like an angel, he would. Hell, if Jared wanted him to go out in nothing but a gold loincloth, he probably would. Maybe. If Jared did too. Smiling to himself as he picked up his beer, Jensen made a mental note to get Jared out in a gold loincloth at some point in the future. That was something he wouldn't mind seeing. He was so wrapped up in his little fantasy that he didn't even notice who was approaching their table.
"Jensen! I thought it was you."
He looked up, recognizing the voice straight away. "Dr. Lang! I mean, John... What're you doing here?"
"Meeting a friend for dinner. It's good to see you relaxing." John turned to Jeff, probably assuming that he was the boy's father. He'd never met Alan, after all, and Jensen didn't speak of his father much at the hospital. "He's very good, you know. Just works a little too hard sometimes, and worries a little too much."
Jared's arm tightened around Jensen and he put his beer down hard on the table. "That's just what Jensen does. And you are?"
John stuck out his hand, and Jared shook it as he introduced himself. "John Lang, pediatrics. I'm teaching Jensen as much as I can in the time I get. Seems to be a lot more than some of our students. He picks things up very quickly. And he's great with the children."
"He's great with everybody," Jared corrected. Jensen eyed him, wondering if maybe Jared was feeling the same way about John as Jensen did about Phin.
"Yes, I guess he is. Well, let me leave you to your meal. It was good seeing you, Jensen. I have a few things planned for Tuesday that should really help with your next paper."
"Thanks," Jensen managed.
"He seems like a nice guy," Stevie said, as John walked off. Either she was unaware of the tension in Jared right now, or she was trying to break it.
"He's gay," Jensen blurted out, then mentally slapped himself. "I mean. He's gay too. Dr. Ballantine made it clear that I could feel at home in his hospital and not have to worry about being who I am."
Beside him, Jared had gone stiff.
"That's good," Jeff said. "This Ballantine seems like a really good guy."
"He is," Jensen said, putting his hand on Jared's knee under the table. "I guess he was just trying to make me see that my Dad's feelings on the matter didn't concern him. And Dr. Lang's an excellent teacher."
"I bet." The two words were muttered, barely audible. Jensen felt their weight, though. He didn't comment on it. He'd save that for when they got home. Point out once again, in a gentler way this time, that maybe Jared should understand just why Jensen felt threatened by Phin.
He didn't really get the chance. Once they were home, Jensen's schoolbooks stowed away in the bedroom, Jared cornered him on the couch and caged him in with arms and legs. He kissed him until he was breathless, started unbuttoning his shirt. Jensen pushed him up, looked up into his eyes.
"What're you doing?"
"We're celebrating. Late anniversary present."
"You know what I mean. Lang isn't like that, okay? It isn't like that at all. He's a teacher, I'm a student. And that's it."
Jared sat up, pushing away from Jensen and the couch as he stood. "That's it? Really? I'm not fucking blind, Jensen. You didn't see the look he gave you?"
"He's gay, Jared. He'd look that way at any hot guy." Jensen was trying for jokey, but Jared just shook his head. Jensen reached out for his wrist and tugged on it, persuading him back down to the couch. "Doesn't mean anything's going to happen. I won't let it. He won't try. He knows I'm happy with you."
"Hmm."
"So." Jensen swallowed, trying to work up his nerve. He hated talking real dirty, but he figured Jared might like it if he did. "You, uh. You had plans?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah? Did they involve anything like your tongue and my ass?"
Jared's eyes half-closed and he wrapped a hand around Jensen's bicep. "Maybe."
"Closely followed by your dick, right?"
"Definitely a possibility."
"Are we doing this here?"
Jared said nothing, just pushed down on Jensen's arms as he swung a leg over his lap and sat there, kissing him hard and wet. When they pulled apart Jensen's mouth was shiny and red with it. He was breathing hard, his eyes shut, and Jared finished with the buttons on his shirt and helped him pull it free of his pants and sat back while he got his arms free of the sleeves. Jared's palms came down on his chest in the next instant, spreading over it. His thumb rubbed over Jensen's collarbone and then down to toy with the metal bar through his nipple. He dipped his head, licking around it and over it, and Jensen moaned.
"I got you an anniversary present, you know," Jared said, lifting his head slightly. His breath tickled over Jensen's skin and made him shiver.
"You did?"
"In the bedroom."
"Figures."
Jared chuckled, let him up. "Lose your pants," he told him, and went ahead to their bedroom.
Jensen stripped there in the living room and then followed him, unsurprised to find Jared half-undressed and rooting around in the nightstand for lube and condoms. He was about to get on the bed when Jared pulled him back.
"Huh-uh, I've got this." He crawled onto the bed and lay flat on his back, then coaxed Jensen into position with his hands and legs. Jensen soon got it, and waited while Jared unzipped his pants and kicked them down his legs. He was about to make a wisecrack about how hot Jared looked with his pants around his ankles, but then there were hands spreading his ass and Jared was pushing his tongue around the tight ring of muscle there. Jensen's entire body shuddered with it and he moaned loudly.
Jared hummed against his skin in response and he got the message like Jared had spoken out loud and clear. Leaning his weight on one elbow, he took Jared's cock in his hand and brought his mouth down over the tip, licking and sucking teasingly while his hand worked the rest. Jared lifted his hips, urging him to take more in, and he could barely concentrate when the tip of his boyfriend's tongue pushed inside him. He breathed out hard, making a strangled noise, and doubled his own efforts on Jared's dick.
When one of Jared's hands came around his dick too, he forgot what he was doing for a second. Jared's erection bobbed against his lips; his mouth hung open as he let his brain remember how to keep him from collapsing outright. Then there was a squeeze to his dick and he opened his eyes and went back to his task. He didn't want to make Jared come. He knew that. He wanted Jared to be able to fuck him into tomorrow and he didn't want to have to wait the obligatory recovery time. So he kept his mouth at the tip, his hand tight at the base, and made Jared's entire body as tense as a coiled spring. He blocked out what Jared was doing as much as was possible. He had to last just as long.
He didn't let go until he felt a sharp slap to his ass. His body jerked and he opened his mouth, letting Jared's dick fall against his stomach. "Fuck," he swore. Jared stretched his ass once more with his tongue and then started to shift them both.
"Let's," he said, sliding up and around until he was on his knees behind Jensen, rolling a condom onto his dick just before he lined up. He coated it with lube, although the first push in was plenty easy. Jensen pushed back against him, felt Jared's arm come around his stomach. He heard himself say something, didn't know what. Everything was centered on the feel of Jared's cock pushing deep into him. He was pulled back until he was almost sat in Jared's lap, and then Jared's mouth was at his throat and he tipped his head back, wanting more. They were still for a couple of moments and then Jared got him to move. To set the pace that he wanted and needed.
Jensen wrapped a hand around his own cock, let Jared's hands stay busy with pulling his body up so that he could slam into it again and again. He squeezed around it hard, and dragged his fingers up through slick pre-come. Shuddered as he strayed his thumb across the crown, pressing into the slit.
"I love watching you jerk off," Jared whispered to him. "I want you to come when I come, though..."
Jensen groaned in agreement. He wanted that too. Yes. He bit his lip, drew blood, and tried to breathe.
It was late. Not so late that the adult store next door to them wasn't still open, but late enough that the traffic outside the apartment had died down to just a few cars every ten minutes. Jensen was stood next to the window, mostly hidden by the frame, and his hand was pressed to the glass as Jared kissed his back. His head hung forward as he fought not to relax too much. They were both in pyjama pants now, just watching the street and cooling off after their energetic love-making.
Jensen was mostly thinking. He'd been thinking all day, since his talk with Stevie. Since realizing how long had gone by since the day when that scared young man had stumbled into a gas station and two lives had been changed completely. He thought of that younger man as a different person now. He'd never let himself get into a situation like that again, he knew that. And that was thanks to Jared. The same applied, he thought, when he reversed the names. Chris was right. Jared was keeping to his promises.
Still, Jensen felt restless. He didn't know why, or what to do about it, but he had a feeling that once everything with Coulter was done and out of the way, once the bar was finished and open for business again, that then he would work it out. At least, he hoped so.
"I love you," Jared murmured. "Love it here, too."
Jensen nodded. "I love you, too. And thank you for my present."
Jared's mouth dragged over his skin. "Mm, that wasn't your present. That was mine."
"Oh really?" Jensen ducked down, turned until Jared had him pressed with his back to the window, the glass cool on his heated skin. "Then what's mine?"
Jared kissed him, then stepped back and headed across the room to the nightstand again. Jensen watched him open up the drawer and shook his head.
"I can't, not yet, just-"
"Jensen, catch." Jared threw something at him and his hand came up instinctively to catch it. It jingled and landed heavy against his palm. He curled his fingers around it and then straightened, opening them up again. It was a thick clip keyring, with a leather tab that had his initials on it in little silver studs. From it hung a single key.
"Is this a bike key?" Jensen asked.
Jared nodded. "Or, more accurately, your bike key."
"But I don't... I can't ride a bike, Jay."
Jared came back to him, tucked a finger underneath his chin and smiled down at him. "You can't ride a bike yet," he said.
