I hate to admit it, but looking at the 14 Tabs I have open on firefox, there is no denying it.. I am officially a geek.
Conversation in my living room at 11:50 goes like this:
Alan: "Oh my goodness I'm such a geek! I have 13 tabs open. Listen to this: *Lists off tabs* "
Catherine: " *Laughs* Yeah, you're a geek.."
What's worse is I just used the handy dictionary I have on
Dashboard to make sure I was using the word "geek" correctly.. Sadly, I was right. Confirmed by the "define: " syntax of Google's search engine, I had to check I was using the right word, as "geek" and "nerd" are very similar.. I was soon to find that "nerd" was (loosely) defined thus:
"Nerd - A nerd is very similar to a geek, but with more RAM and a faster modem. Nerds often find geeks dull because geeks don't spend enough time talking about computers." (
http://www.scotsmist.co.uk/glossary_n.html)
nope. not me. I would certainly be dull to a nerd.
So what was the original definition of geek?
"Geek - 1 An unfashionable or socially inept person.
[with adj.] a person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest : a computer geek
2 A carnival performer who does wild or disgusting acts."
Just as an aside, I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm socially inept, nor a carnival performer of wild or disgusting acts.. So that leaves me to be an unfashionable person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest. Fair, maybe not.. accurate? Possibly. Depends if I'm talking to the coolest person, or a nerd. As Mel would say, that is subjective.
What would that interest be I hear you ask? In fact, you're probably guessing already, or just groaning.
Let me first list my Tabs that are open:
So I'm a Jesus Geek.. Christianity and all things concerning, I love to read and know and learn. I'll read the Bible online, I'll read the Greek text online, I'll research the Hebrew. I'll read others ideas about the bible, and about faith and loving Jesus, and I'll read people's objections about faith and loving Jesus. And I'll read the Mercury, just to remind myself there is better reading out there.
Just ask my friends, once I'm done reading, I take it to them where I am once again reminded that they consider me "Intense" and promptly shut my mouth. They know who they are, they'll be shaking their heads saying "He only just realised all of this?!". Sorry. Yes.
Oh, and those of you who are switched on would ask "What about Tab no. 14?" Yeah, I only listed 13.
- Tab 14, my dear friends, is livejournal.. 'cause what would a geek's realisation of being a geek be without a blog about it.. (www.livejournal.com)
