but yes im very excited that there is someone else out there with knowledge of independent hindi film...
you are right chingaari (or gangaajal) wasnt independent- in fact, the idea of a film that doesnt cater to the mass audience is relatively new in india with the introduction of multiplexes...

Chingaari had some of the BEST acting i've seen recently, but the plot was poorly done and very flawed. the climax, although excellently coreographed, also did not make (sociological) sense. very few films dedicate adequite attention to the sociological dynamics of a community prior to the inevitable uprising- its all about one persons struggle against humanity, and then a sudden and irrational torrent of public support at the end...
Ketan Mehta's most brillant film, Mirch Masala, is one of the few 'uprising' films i listed, which manages to execute a sociologically sensible climax. I really liked Matrubhoomi, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara, My Brother Nikhil, and 15 Park Ave (but this comment is getting way too long for me to say too much about these...)
In another lifetime i would have loved to study film in college...
Check out some movies that i'm trying to get somehow here... i would love it if you could start one too and we can share...
