Abilities: Jacques is pretty much your average joe. No superpowers, special abilities, or anything like that. However, he can apparently sketch near perfect portraits of people; he drew the killer of Fon's parents to show the police and Fon remarked during an introspection that the drawing was flawless. As far as self-defense is concerned, Jacques attends a military school and is - according to Fon - better than anyone in his class with a gun.
Background: Jacques was born to two loving parents in Ilegenes, an island known for its gene enhancements and tampering. While it's supposed to be illegal, anyone with enough money can now freely purchase or create clones, enhance animals, or create new beings entirely. However, Jacques was brought up to appreciate the beauty of the natural order of things. In fact, his parents tried to bring him up to be the ideal child. They played him music as a baby to stimulate his mind and tried to encourage him to go down the road they foresaw him going down. He didn't turn out the way they planned, really, and his parents realized that you can't force someone to be something. They have to decide for themselves and you must simply guide them when you can and support their decisions. That isn't to say they don't nag and lecture when Jacques brushes off the subject of figuring out his future, though. Eventually, he became the oldest child in a family of seven children.
When he graduated high school, he decided to expand his horizons beyond Ilegenes and travel the world. With nothing but his wallet and a small backpack, Jacques set out and absorbed everything he could for about three years. During those three years, he experienced a great many things and learned the true meanings of gratitude, nature's beauty, and working hard to get where you want. Back in Ilegenes, people would blame failure on inadequate genes and immediately try to fix it instead of working harder to succeed on their own. Seeing the world outside of Ilegenes made Jacques appreciate hardship and unconditional kindness. He got lost on a few occassions, but was treated to a meal and directions by a complete stranger. Another time, he had his wallet stolen but someone paid for his cab ride out of their own pocket.
Still, Jacques had a lot of growing left to do. For as much as he experienced, he still didn't take his future too terribly seriously and would have been content to coasting had it not been for his parents' recommendation to settle down and get serious. He decided to attend military school so that he wouldn't have to spend money-- and little did he know, that decision would change his life entirely.
He arrived late and missed the welcoming ceremony. Instead, he is found sleeping in a chair in the room he happened to share with a certain Fon Fortinbras Littenber. At first, he gave Fon a bad impression, making him believe he was sloppy and lazy. Being his roommate, however, it was hard not to notice when Fon had severe nightmares (primarily about his past) and Jacques offered him comfort and an ear to listen to his troubles. Fon eventually came to trust him and the two became close friends. The more Jacques learned about Fon, though, the more he got protective of him. He found out that his parents had been murdered by someone in the Black Market, taken in afterwords by the so-called "Father" of the Genetic Sodom, and that he had unnerving reflexes and senses. Not only that, Fon had dangerously focused determination once he set his eyes on something. On an afternoon with their other friends, Fon spotted the man who was responsible for his parents' murders in a crowd and went berserk. Jacques went after him and had to physically restrain him to keep him from pursuing the man. After that, Fon became obsessed with visiting the Inner Island - the place where the darkest side of gene manipulation and the Black Market thrived - in order to find that man again. Despite Jacques' many attempts to get through to him, Fon persisted until Jacques finally handcuffed himself to the other. If he went to the Inner Island, he was going to go with Jacques. They were able to glean information from the locals about the man, but were later confronted by a gang. Provoked to a level of rage and survival, Fon broke out of the handcuffs and took down every single gang member with his bare hands with Jacques watching on in shock. He stopped Fon before he could kill one of them and practically dragged him home to get him away from that place. After an argument, Fon put the idea out of his mind for a while.
Their attention, instead, went to the fact that suddenly members of Ilegenes' government were being forced to step down from politics for corruption. They came to find out that their friend Nicolas was outing politicians because he couldn't stand the unfair situation that Ilegenes was in because of the Black Market and the genes marketing. They (Jacques, Fon, and Crudup - another friend of theirs) decided to help Nicolas with what he started and created a small, private rebellion. They called themselves the Elephant's Tusk. From then on, they worked together to try and change the country for the better.
It was going smoothly until Fon got an e-mail about the man he'd been hunting for. Without a word, Fon charged out of the school and went to pursue the man. Jacques realized what he was doing when he saw the e-mail on Fon's computer in their room and took off after him. Unfortunately, Fon had already found the man and began to violently murder him. By the time Jacques got there, he saw a completely berserk and mentally shattered Fon, covered in blood with a knife in his hand. He begged him to snap out of it, but Fon charged him in a purely blind and animalistic rage. Suddenly, Fon was sedated and carried away by a mysterious crew in white suits. One of them was to escort Jacques back to the school and erase his memories, but he began to cry and worry himself sick over Fon. She took pity on him and left his memories in tact, simply taking him to the military school.
Fon was gone for three weeks and Jacques fell into a depression. The person most important to him slipped out of his fingers and he couldn't protect him.
When Fon finally did return, Jacques welcomed him home with a smile and simply told him he'd been waiting for him. The return was hardly happy, however. During those three weeks, Fon learned of his origins as a manmade human being and that his parents were just contracted to raise him as their own-- to give him a normal childhood. Feeling cheated, that he had no willpower of his own, and convinced that his parents only loved him because they were 'contracted to', Fon became suicidal. Jacques noticed this behavior quickly, spotting bruises on his neck after Fon tried to strangle himself. Eventually, Fon went to jump off the roof of the school, but Jacques had followed him up there and held onto him before he could fall. At first, he was angry that Fon wanted to end his life and flat-out told him he refused to let him die. Fon told him he didn't feel like he was worthy of living and that he deceived everyone, to which Jacques told him he didn't care, that he forgave him, and that he didn't want to go back if Fon wasn't going to be there, for he was the only one who could ever be by his side. This seemed to calm Fon's insecurities about his manmade nature and the manmade 'substitutes' for him. For the first time since he returned, he cried and apologized to Jacques, realizing that these emotions he felt when he heard those words were from his own will, not because they were programmed into him as he thought.
Not long afterwords, Jacques asked Fon to come home with him and meet his family. He agreed. For the first time in a while, Fon felt he was actually apart of a real family and got to know Jacques' parents and siblings. Jacques' father told him that he spoke of Fon often and that he's slowly helped him tranform from a wandering boy into a responsible man. Surprised that he's had such an impact on someone, Fon found a sense of belonging.
Once they returned back to school, Fon asked him to stay by his side and if following him through a path that might be blood-stained is okay, even if he couldn't tell him what happened during those three weeks yet. In response, Jacques felt Fon needed him more than ever and told him he'd follow him to Hell if he had to.
For the most part, things have returned to normal and they've continued attending the military academy.
Appearance: [
Portrait]
(But his eyes are blue, not green. jsyk.)
Personality: At first, Jacques may come off as lazy and overly carefree, but only because he likes to sit back and enjoy the simpler things in life. He doesn't let himself get hung up on too many things. To him, one should make the best of everything rather than dwell on the bad experiences. When it comes right down to it, Jacques is wise beyond his years and has matured greatly from his experiences when he traveled outside Ilegenes and from his friendship with Fon. Through his travels, he's experienced hardships and problems that most people in Ilegenes never had to deal with. Due to this, he's come to be more appreciative of everything around him and, in a world of genetically enhanced everything, is one of the few who truly prefers natural beauty over genetic alteration. He is aware of what goes on around him and spends a lot of time watching people. In part due to this, he has a knack for reading others and when someone is a little harder to read, he spends a lot of time trying to figure them out.
It doesn't take long to see that Jacques is an amiable and kind young man. He's certainly not shy about approaching others and isn't easily daunted, either. In the very first chapter, Fon grabbed him by the collar and told him - venomously - that he'd kill him if he assumed things about his adoptive father. Yet, in the next chapter, Jacques followed him around anyway and even tried to teach him to be friendlier. He's persistent, especially when something catches his interest or when he feels he's needed. Rarely does he find reason to be what one might consider over-bearing about it, but when he does, it's justified. The phrase 'treat others how you want to be treated' rings true with him, as he typically treats people with respect and friendliness until he's given a reason to dislike them.
While it's not easy to get on his bad side (the dude has the patience of a saint), Jacques has little to no tolerance for lying, cheating, or stealing. Injustices are an easy way to set off his temper and he hardly ever hesitates to confront the culprit himself, especially if the actions brought harm to someone. He finds it frustrating that people can't rely on their own abilities and hard work to come through in the end. The blame is always on someone or something else if they can't get what they want.
Many of these traits basically roll into one very important one that stands out the most in Jacques: loyalty. He is your quintessential big brother figure, often taking it upon himself to take care of others. Granted, he's the oldest of seven children, so it's a trait pretty well ingrained in him at this point. Nevertheless, if he's close enough to you to take on the big brother role, it's pretty much set that you're not getting rid of him. Should you do something stupid enough to make him turn into the protective big brother, he does a 180 degree turn in personality. In this case, one should be prepared for a lot of stern-faced lecturing. He becomes incredibly strict and serious, taking it upon himself to make sure they don't get into any further trouble.
Overall, Jacques is a very level-headed, calm, and big-hearted young man, always thinking of others before himself.

A post from Squarewarts. RP Sample: On every cloud, there's a silver lining. Jacques firmly believed that, even in the wake of his whole world being destroyed by this mysterious Darkness. That silver lining, at the moment? Travel. A true wanderer at heart, he was blown away by the knowledge that several different worlds existed on one plane-- or that other worlds outside his own even existed in general. So much to explore and embrace. And even in his traveling, it wasn't as if he didn't have a goal this time. With every fiber of his being, Jacques maintained the confidence that Fon was out there somewhere, too. His was a will too strong to be swept away by this Darkness. If Jacques could survive it, Fon could without a doubt.
And so it was with determination in his heart and an optimistic smile on his face that Jacques traveled first to Destiny Islands. In some ways, it reminded him a lot of Ilegenes, and he deduced that Fon would feel most at home there. Besides, wasn't that where they shipped all the younger folks to keep them safe? To go to the academy?
Regretably, no one had seen or heard of a young man with black hair and beautiful peacock eyes named Fon, but before long, Jacques was caught up in the beauty of the place. Everything was natural and pure. People actually appreciated true beauty here and it made any weight on his heart ease up considerably. The first thing he did after leaving the academy was search out these strange things called paopu fruit. Apparently if you shared one with someone, your fate was intertwined forever. Now, Jacques wasn't sure he really believed in fate, but it was a harmless myth and the fruit looked delicious. He munched on one while he watched the tides curl to and fro over the shore and tucked another in his pocket for later.
"Maybe I'll stay here for a week or so," he mused, staring into the seemingly endless horizon.
No wonder everyone who lived here seemed so chipper and peaceful! Even with these "lost world" mishaps going on, the cheer was infectious! Made it hard to want to leave. Fortunately, there were a whole slew of things for one to see on these islands and Jacques intended to explore it all. He'd have to get a job eventually, but why not see what's waiting for him out there?
