5.) Do you sew most often for yourself, or for other people?

For me and my hubby. Sometimes we do stitchand bitch and I help others.

6.) What do you sew the most often? (Examples: Clothes for adults, clothes for children, costumes, gender specific clothes, et cetera)

Adult costumes and gener specific.

7.) Do you generally use commercial sewing patterns produced by companies such as Simplicity, Butterick, and McCall’s? Why or why not?

Yes I do. 99 cent sales...=) I can see what I can do with the patterns. Costumes have male suiting, which is not offered by the big three, except in costumes. KwikSew doesnt have costumes I need.

8.) If you have used commercial sewing patterns published by other companies (Note: Vogue is a child company of McCall’s), what did you like or not like about their pattern instructions? Why did you like or not like these things?

No. I simply havent had the need or opportunity. I have self patterend gloves- it took some work and a few tries, but I did it.

9.) Do you follow a pattern’s instructions while you are using it? Why or why not?

Always. You can't improvise until you see the instructions. I read instructions before anything else. I often read them comprehensively and I try to avoid hand sewing.

10.) Do you feel that the instructions for commercial sewing patterns are easy to follow? Why or why not?

They can be easy and others are not. Sometimes it's just familiarity now that makes them easier. But I have made mistakes becasue I could get what they were asking or understand the diagram, or both. To solve this I went on line for a different wording on it. I think it would help is pattern insturctions used the pattern piece numbers ***on the diagrams**!!!!!! It's a concept called part numbering. They do it, but why they don't number them ont eh diagrams I will never know. If they had numbered a diagram, I wouldnt have failed on my first costume. When I find these failures in directions I write my own or enhance them on the instructions. I'm an engineer..you think I could follow pattern isntructions and understand them..but man, these things really could use some more work.

I hate instruction skipping. I hate hate hate beeing sent all over the instructions "go do step 13 for view a" I go to step 13 for view A and it says "do steps 21 to 25 for view C"....just tell me what to do, dammit.

11.) Should the instructions for commercial sewing patterns be more specifically aimed at inexperienced seamstresses, and therefore use plainer language and clearer descriptions (just as a start)? Why or why not?

See answer to #10. I think for EASY/Simple to intermediate...yes. Advanced, probably not, but whats wrong with more detailed isntructions for all?

12.) Do you think that the diagrams included in commercial sewing pattern instructions are confusing? Why or why not?

Yes and no. Number the parts please!! Send me to a web vid that adds to the instructions.

13.) Do you think there should be more diagrams used in commercial sewing pattern instructions? Why or why not?

Yes, and number the parts. provide a web link with more details or a vid.

14.) Would you be interested in the ability to access pattern instructions on the Internet, as well as having a printed copy with your pattern? Keep in mind this would have many benefits other than allowing you access to the instructions if you lose your printed copy. Why or why not?

Yes! It's also cheaper. Plus, allow users to add comments on the steps.

15.) Would you be interested in having access to instructional videos on the Internet for the pattern you are using? Why or why not?

Already mentioned this. Yes. Personally I wish they would hire me to do this-LOL. NOT using a serger or fancy machine either. The demo machine should just be a basic machine.

16.) What changes would you like to see made to commercial pattern instructions to make them more convenient for your use?

Use better paper. Dont use pointer instructions to send me to another set of instructions. Use larger text and larger diagrams.

17.) What pattern would you say has been the most difficult for you? If you can’t name a specific pattern, the name of the company that published it will do nicely. Why was this pattern so difficult for you?

Simplicity.
