Why am I so late with this? I have no excuses. Just been vaguely in the blah department of late. Too much stuff I gotta get done and not enough funds to finish it with. This always frustrates me.
ANYWAY. Eight ways to win my heart.
oo1 - Be comfortable and enthusiastic about healthy debate. Being forthright and honest and firm in the debating ring translates to respecting me and trusting me to be able to argue my own way out of a paper bag. It doesn't have to be about winning -- it just has to be about exploring all the opportunities involved with a certain question or idea.
oo2 - Build up a rapport of inside jokes and personal mythology. Certain ways of saying words or certain references to favourite things. It creates kind of a special, happy safety net for me. Something personal and intimate that I can count on in even the largest of crowds.
oo3 - Do the dishes. I will cook and bake and make whatever food you want till the cows come home but I hate dishes. I'll always do my own but if I've made something for the both of us? I will adore it if I don't have to then scrub up afterwards.
oo4 - Write a poem. I kid you not. I eat this stuff up, so long as there are no rhyming couplets involved. Sophisticated internal rhyme schemes especially get my heart a-beating. Gavin would deny that they are any good but he has often written things for me that I still treasure years down the road. This also goes for other creative works -- one of my favourite gifts was a video game that Gavin made last Christmas, featuring me as the main character.
oo5 - Be supportive of the vegetarian thing. I don't demand that the person I'm with goes veggie as well. Heck, I'll even prepare meat for Gavin if I have the time/he doesn't have the time. But don't treat it like it's a hang-up or an obstacle.
oo6 - Take me dancing. I love to go, even though I'm rubbish at it.
oo7 - Chocolates on a dreary day. Forget flowers -- they're pretty but they die. A box of chocolates goes a long way and can be just the perfect pick-me-up when I'm feeling blue. Gavin has always been sensitive to these things and, often, before I even know that I'm in a bad mood he has gone off and brought me some sweets and it cheers me up immediately.
oo8 - This is probably the most important. Be kind to and fair with and respectful of everyone else around you. People you meet on the street, people you work with, people in your social circle. I pick up on that a lot and I've found it to be a great indicator of who I actually want to throw my lot in with. I'm a sap for kind souls.
