Ryeowook put his hand against the cool glass as he stared out at the falling snow. He watched uninterestedly as the heat made an outline on the window. It had only been three days, but he missed Kyuhyun already. He always heard stories of lovers being apart for months or even years, but Ryeowook couldn’t understand how people could go so long without seeing the one they love. He felt someone’s hand on his shoulder and a deep voice whisper something in his ear, but the words didn’t comprehend. “Why did he have to leave now, hyung?” Ryeowook asked. He hadn’t meant to voice it out loud, but after he did, he didn’t regret it.
“Ryeowook-ah…” He only now comprehended who the voice belonged to. He turned around and allowed himself to be held by the older boy
“Yesungie-hyung, he said he’d wait for me…I don’t understand why he had to go…what if something bad happens to him, hyung?” Ryeowook could feel the tears start down his face, but made no effort to wipe them away, instead just letting them fall onto Yesung’s shoulder.
Yesung held the younger boy tighter. He hated seeing him like this. He loved this boy like his own younger brother. He knew Ryeowook had wanted to go to Japan to study with Kyuhyun, but he’d had to stay home due to problems getting his visa ready. He’d asked his lover to wait and go in the spring, but Kyuhyun already had everything ready and decided to go even without him. Yesung thought about what it would be like to be in the same situation. What if Kibum had left to go somewhere like that without him for three months? He couldn’t imagine how he could go three months without Kibum and didn’t think Kibum would ever do that, but then again, he’d never thought Kyuhyun would do that to Ryeowook either. He rested his cheek against the top of Ryeowook’s head. “Everything’s going to be okay. I promise nothing’s going to happen to him. Have you talked to him since he left?”
Ryeowook nodded. “Everyday.” He smiled at the thought. “Just last night we talked for two hours straight, but I just…I worry, you know. And I miss him. I miss being able to see him when I want. And…and it just…it hurts that he went without me when we were planning on going together, you know?” His tears were calming down now and he took a few deep breaths. “And right before Christmas, too. You know what, Yesungie-hyung, in four days, Christmas day, is our anniversary, mine and Kyuhyun’s. How could he leave so close to then without me?”
“Ryeowook-ah, have you talked to him about this? You said you talked to him last night, right?”
“Yeah, but it didn’t even really hit me until this morning when I woke up and looked out the window and saw the snow. He loves watching the snow, hyung I hope he gets to see it in Kyoto.”
“How about you go call him, Ryeowookie? Go call him and talk to him about it, okay? I think it’ll make you feel better.”
Ryeowook let go of his hyung and smiled. “Yeah, I think I will. Thank you for listening.” He gave Yesung another quick hug before entering the room next to them, his bedroom.
“I don’t want to hear you having phone-sex, either!” Yesung called after the younger boy jokingly as Ryeowook shut the door, but he heard him laugh on the other side then quickly open the again.
“Yeah, well I don’t ever want to hear you and Kibum-ah having sex either, but we can’t all get our way, can we?”
Yesung laughed. “Oh shut up!” he responded and watched as Ryeowook shut the door again before going back out to the living room where he’d been before. He saw Kibum on the couch and smiled. He placed a light kiss on the younger boy’s lips before sitting down on the couch next to him.
“Is he going to be okay?” Kibum asked, leaning down to rest his head on Yesung’s shoulder.
“Yeah, I think he’ll be just fine. He just misses Kyuhyun is all.”
“Ah, I understand where he’s coming from.” Kibum nodded a little with understanding then turned his head up to take Yesung’s mouth with his own once again.
“I know, Kyuhyunnie, I know you didn’t want to just cancel, but it still really hurts. Not only are you not going to be here on Christmas, it’s our anniversary, too.” Ryeowook could feel the tears burning the back of his eyes as they threatened to fall once again.
“Ryeowook, I know, I know. How could I forget that day and I’m really sorry, sweetie. I really am. I have a present for you though. It’s going to be there Christmas morning. I made special sure of that. I promise you, it’s going to be the best present.”
Ryeowook could hear the smile in his lover’s voice, which made him smile again too. “Baby, the only thing that could be the best would be to have you…here with me, of course.” He added on the last part quickly and sarcastically.
“Oh, of course. But you know you got it backwards, right? It would actually be -me- having -you-”
“Oh, how could I possibly make that mistake, Kyuhyunnie? You know I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Ryeowook smiled deviously at the direction their conversation was going, remembering Yesung’s earlier comment.
“Hey, listen, baby, I have to go now. My class starts in five minutes so I’ll call you later, alright?”
“Yeah, okay. Have fun in class. I love you.”
“I love you, too, Ryeowook.” Ryeowook heard the click on the other end before hanging up himself and laying back on the bed, staring at the picture on the background of his phone and sighed. It was a picture of him and Kyuhyun together. Kyuhyun was taking the picture and Ryeowook had his arms around the younger boy’s neck and he was kissing his cheek. Ryeowook smiled at the picture then kissed his phone and, without shutting it, rested it on his stomach.
Over the next few days Ryeowook acted as happy and as like himself as he could in order to keep his mind off the fact that Kyuhyun wasn’t there with him. He often found himself watching the snow, wondering whether or not Kyuhyun could see it where he was, even though he knew he couldn’t, and giving his other roommates more hugs than usual. He also noticed that these hugs were lasting just a touch longer than they used to as well, but they didn’t seem to mind the affection.
He and Kyuhyun continued to talk every night for as long as they could, usually about two or three hours or until Yesung came over and told him to stop having sex on the phone, but it still wasn’t the same as having Kyuhyun there to hold and to kiss and to hold him. To tell him in person that he loved him. Ryeowook reminded Kyuhyun every night how much he missed him and how hard it was for him to him to get to sleep at night without Kyuhyun there.
Finally it was Christmas day. ‘Not soon enough,’ Ryeowook thought as he opened his eyes and sat up in his bed, ‘or too soon…whichever way you want to look at it.’ He stretched then quickly pulled on his bathrobe over his pajamas to keep himself warm and picked up his phone to send a text to Kyuhyun “Happy Anniversary and Merry Christmas, Baby. I love you”. He meandered out to the kitchen, dragging his feet a little and mumbling a small ‘Merry Christmas’ to Yesung and Kibum who were sitting on the floor under a big blanket watching the parade on TV.
He returned from the kitchen a minute later with a bowl of hot oatmeal and took a seat on the couch. He was only a few bites into his breakfast when suddenly a realization hit him. They don’t deliver on Christmas. How could he not have thought about this earlier? Because he’d trusted what Kyuhyun said...“It’s going to be there Christmas morning.” But how could it be here this morning and not last night when packages don’t come on Christmas? He set his bowl on his lap and looked to the other two to ask them about it, but the moment he saw them kissing he decided to just pay attention to the parade instead and finish eating.
About an hour later Ryeowook finally decided to get up and take his bowl out to the kitchen. As he was making his way back to his bedroom, though, the doorbell rang. He glanced back to Yesung and Kibum and it was just as he’d expected. He rolled his eyes and turned toward the door. “Don’t worry, I’ll get it!” He called back to them.
“Thanks, Ryeowook-ah!” He heard Yesung respond, but he could tell that his sentence had been cut short. He sighed and opened the door and although he didn’t know what he’d been expecting, this definitely hadn’t been it.
“Kyuhyunnie? W-what are you doing here?” He asked as a few tears crept into his voice.
“I told you I had a present for you, didn’t I?” Kyuhyun said, holding out his arms to welcome Ryeowook into an embrace. The older boy gladly took the invitation and wrapped his arms around his lover’s waist. It felt so good to be held again.
“Why did you come back?”
“I…I couldn’t stay without you. They gave me a refund for everything but the flight, but even if they didn’t I would have come back, baby. How could I stay away from you on Christmas, our favorite day?” Kyuhyun lifted Ryeowook’s face to meet his own in a kiss. “I love you, Ryeowook.”
“I love you, too, Kyuhyunnie.” Ryeowook smiled before taking the younger boy’s mouth again. “You know, my bed’s been getting cold since you left…”
“Oh yeah? How about we go warm it up?” Ryeowook watched as Kyuhyun smirked and looked over in the direction of the other two boys. He laughed softly as he thought that that’s why he’d missed him so much and kissed him yet again.
