A Very Potter Birthday

Jul 31, 2011 22:54

I'm late in posting this but today is the birthday of Harry Potter, and his creater J.K. Rowling. As I've written about multiple times on this blog, I am a huge fan of the series. I started reading them when I was twelve and something about the books clicked with me. It's impossible to go into detail about it because I have such a bad migraine, but I am so thankful to Jo for wrting these books and for just being amazing. Back in 2009 I had left the university I started my freshmen year at and was depressed and disappointed in myself. I felt hopeless. Then I watched the commencement address Jo gave at Harvard University. She talked aboutt failure and the fact that when you fail it hurts, but once you've reached bottom there's no way to go but up from there. She said that when you are at your lowest you find out who in your life actually truly cares for you, and if you are able to persevere you can realize your own strength.

I started back at a community college the next semester and received my AA this May. I'm starting at a 4-year university next month so I can receive my BA. I did make mistakes and fail in the past but I was able to persevere, and I know now that nothing is impossible because I had the strength to get through my failures. So, I've embedded part one of this speech entitled "The Fringe Benefits of Failure" because no words ever written have had as much an effect on my life as the ones featured in this speech.
