Last night while browsing around the interwebs, I decided to look up the lyrics and official vid to that song TIk Tok by Kesha, a new pop artist. Needless to say, it's as annoying as when I heard it the first time, and seeing the video while knowing the lyrics only made it worse.
So to ease my brain, I looked up the video for Just Dance by Lady Gaga. Now being the person I am, I couldn't help notice the similarities between the two videos and songs. They both talked about getting drunk and partying till you simply passed out, with plenty of sexual undertones. So the question became, why do I like Just Dance, and not Tik Tok? More over, why do I like Gaga, and not Kesha?y
I sat back and gave it some serious thought, and I think I came up with some reasonable answers:
1) Gaga can sing. I've heard several Kesha songs, and her voice always sounds like shit. The only time she sounds remotely ok is when the they do that techno thing with her voice, and that hardly counts. I've also heard both of them live. You can guess who won that one.
2)Gaga is for adults. In Kesha's video, she portrays herself as a teen that goes out getting shwasted and hooking up with guys she doesn't know and falling asleep in bathtubs(???). While I'm not one to say certain people don't have the right to free speech, I wonder if it even concerns her that young girls are looking up to her, wanting to be like her. At least Gaga has a strictly adult appeal in her videos, cause that's the audiance she's going for.
3)Gaga knows she's white, and owns it. And I'm not saying white girls can't do hip hop, but they have a harder time being taken seriously. So when she comes out as a little white girl saying "P DIddy," "swagger," and "Po-Po," it sounds pretty ridiculous. It maybe unfair, but it's a biased world we live in. The only time Gaga has ever really done the hip hop thing was in paper gangster, and she at least did that with some style, which brings me to my next point...
4) Gaga has her own style. I've seen the way Kesha holds herself, and quite frankly, it looks like she's trying to be something she isn't. I;m not saying she's gotta be all sweet and innocent like Taylor Swift or something, but she doesn't look or sound in any way original. I like Gaga because when she came on the scene, she held nothing back about herself and has yet to do so. Even in situations where it looks like she sold out, she still holds that same crazy style about her, and that's something I love.
So that's about all I can think of now. I'm sure there's plenty more reasons, but that should about cover what I'm thinking.
