"Maybe I don't want to quit."
You stare at him, stunned into silence. His words carry bitterness that you never suspected he could feel. His eyes flash pain and suddenly he turns away, fleeing. You cry out his name, a plea for him to stay. You need to know what it means.
"Hiroto! Wait!"
He's running faster than ever, and you hear him cough again, almost like an echo. The sound breaks your heart, and you want to rip that cancer stick away from his slender fingers. You know you can never bear to see him ill.
As he turns the corner of the building, you are suddenly galvanized into action. You chase after him, silently thanking the gods that you have such long legs, and catch him as he ducks into some dimly lit storage room. You cough as the overpowering odour of smoke fills the room, and he is kind enough to stub it out.
He says nothing.
You wish you were brave enough to confess to him, right here, right now. The real reason why you don't want to see him smoke and waste away his life. His oh so precious life.
"What did you mean?"
Your voice comes out as a trembling murmur. He looks upset at that, his expression changing from anger to sorrow, eyes bright with tears.
"It's nothing."
You can hear the lie in those words. You know him too well. It hurts all the more because you thought you knew him - you thought he wouldn't cry over something like this, you thought he wasn't the kind to run away from problems, you thought he was so strong.
"Tell me the truth, Pon. Please."
He swallows audibly, tears streaming down his face, although he tries so hard to blink them away. Why is he hurting so? Why is he breaking down now? You want to hold him tightly and reassure him.
"Shou, I'm sorry."
Without warning, his plush lips crash against yours. You taste bittersweet smoke and salt tears, and the barest hint of candy that you gave him in the morning. He tastes like all that and more, as you kiss him back hungrily. Your lips almost hurt, feeling abused, but gods you need this.
After all, he is your only antidote.
It's him you think of when things get too difficult, when things seem far too heavy to bear. When you're so terribly weary and feel like you could die. When you feel that life is poisoning you and killing you slowly. You think of him and his beautiful smile and his optimism, and you feel like you can go on.
He is your antidote to the poison that is life.
Suddenly he pulls away, gasping for air. His eyes are red, and he is shivering, looking worse for the wear, and incredibly shocked and confused. No words leave his lips. And suddenly, you realise what he means. You know what he's really trying to say.
Once more you lean in and press your lips to his, more gentle and loving this time. He clings on to you, like you're his only lifeline in a world that has suddenly changed too fast for him to comprehend. Like you're his antidote to the poison in his system, his drug to cure himself.
As he is yours, now and forever.
