Answer me this. How is it possible to enjoy RPing as an anthropomorphic dragon (on multiple online venues) and yet feel so...alone in the middle of a furry convention?
Don't get me wrong, my trip to Further Confusion this past week was far more positive than negative. I got to say hello to all my Dreamer and non-Dreamer friends who I knew would be there, which was my primary reason for going in the first place. Got to see lots of great art and assorted merchandise in the art room and dealer's room too. Still, it was difficult to wander through the halls full of fursuiters and see myself as one of their "peers." I greatly enjoyed wandering amongst the artists tables and the art gallery, but not being an artist myself, I never felt like I really belonged with any of them. And aside from the one I co-hosted, I didn't go to any of the panels. I don't think I missed anything I would've really been interested in, but at the same time, I don't know I should feel about that.
But that panel on Character Development was one of the highlights of the show for me. I was concerned that I wouldn't really have much to contribute, again not being an artist and only ever having really developed one character. But it actually went pretty smoothly. Ben and Max's plan to do a "character makeover" discussion with the help of members of the audience turned out to be a great idea, and I felt I was able to keep up with the two of them and add my fair share of insight. I almost wish it had been longer. We had a good outline of tips laid out and a handful of nifty pictures to go along with them. Not a lot of people showed up, but I was prepared for that.
I dunno, maybe it's the fever talking but I can't help feeling...unfulfilled somehow. I don't think I'll be going back next year, but that has more to do with financial reasons than anything else. Besides, as I mentioned before my primary reason for going was to meet a bunch of people I knew online for the first time. Now that that's accomplished, I feel I have little reason to return. ACen is a much better place for me to do that, anyway, and I'm looking forward to attending this year. Maybe there I'll feel like I fit in a little better.
