This is an Op-Ed in the New York Times. It is written by seven soldiers, all of whom have served at least 15 months in Iraq.

Do we just leave? I do not see the war as a success anymore than most folks do, however I cannot subscribe to the idea that wholesale withdrawal will help the situation. I know that it is in vogue to blame the administration for getting us into this mess, but all that does is detract from the discussion of how to solve the situation. I do not claim to be an expert but I cannot help but believe that if we withdraw, we will only be leaving a powder keg behind us ( ... )

Hiya Dean, LTNS.

The short answer is no, we don't just leave, but we do start following a plan that leads to that. Much like the 9/11 report, Bush had a prescription for success written by some pretty smart people. It was called the Iraq Study Group, and like the 9/11 commission, he has largely ignored their recommendations. If you haven't read the report, you can find it here:
http://www.usip.org/isg/iraq_study_group_report/report/1206/index.html

I pretty much agree with its findings. Not surprisingly, you won't find much of a reference to a "surge" in there. Much of the effort required to get us out of Iraq has nothing to do with the military.

Even the ISG admits that any prescription doesn't guarantee success, but the classic definition of insanity applies to our progress today. More of the same isn't going to get us out of there. Its only going to get more people killed.
