Its been awhile, but Richard Clarke has managed in a nutshell to
point out what has been my greatest complaint about how this administration has conducted its foreign policy: the opportunity cost of Iraq.
Undoubtably, 9/11 required a focus of our foreign policy on issues related to terrorism, but not to achieve a myopic approach in one country. Iraq has rendered much of the remainder of our international appoach completely impotent. The staffing issues alone are an indication of the Bush Administration's unwillingness to spend any substantive attention on matters outside of Iraq.
I just hope January 2009 isn't too late to start correcting a lot of these matters.
