dragged into the 21st century

so, to make a long story short; since there’s that whole 5g thing now verizon decided to drop 2g & 3g. My brother & i have 3g flip phones. the changeover was supposed to happen at the end of 2020 & then COVID happened. And then it was moved to the end of 2021 & then 2022.
so we delayed as long as possible to get new phones; 1. because of money, 2. because well, we just didn’t want to.
but now we have smartphones, because all the new basic flip phones have crap reviews, and it’s a whole new thing to get used to.

It is the samusung A53 (the A series is their mid-prices line). It’s 6.5 inches with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 & IP67 dust/water resistant (samsung’s S series & apple's iphones are IP68, so this is pretty good). the 6 means it doesn’t allow dust in & the 7 means it can be in 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. The OS is android 12, and is supposed to have software updates for 5 years & security updates for 4 (or is that the other way around?) it’s available in black, white, blue, & peach (some sites say orange, & it does look like a creamsicle color) but they only have black in the US or i would’ve gotten the white.

You can google if you want more info on cameras & such ) gsmarena.com is a good place for that). i was sitting nearby reading while my brother poked around on his, i see this light come on & then off. i asked; “what was that?” he said; “it has a flashlight.” (in roughly the same tone women use when informing people that their dress/ skirt has pockets). He thought we’d have to download an app for a flashlight & only the higher priced S series would have one built in.

some reviews say the A53 is the best of samsung’s A series & others saying the A52 was better. but we have our fingers crossed. We really won't do much more than call, text, check the weather, maybe take some pictures & video.

he kept the default lock screen & home screens, some weird purple & pink sparkly thing (as he has said; he’s secure in his masculinity & will deal with that kind of stuff). i needed to change it, but i didn’t like the ones it came with (my brother’s flip phone was a samsung & it had nicer stuff). you can download themes (some for free) but it changes everything (texts, calculator, clock, icons, etc.) and there wasn’t one i 100% liked. so he downloaded a google wallpaper app of some sort. so now i have this blue nebula thing (called universe under the microscope 3 or something) for my lock screen & just a basic color of blue gray for my home screen.
it seems so much bigger than our flip phones, i guess it’s because since they were folded most of the time. I’ve been calling smartphones brick slices. Because the early cell phones were referred to as bricks because of their size, they got smaller, & in the past several years they’ve been getting bigger, but thinner.

i really hope if they do 6g it will not be for a very long time. but if/when they do, they will probably keep the 5g for a bit.

it’s from otterbox, part of their defender line. We were considering the commuter case, which is supposed to be just as good & it’s cheaper. but the defender has cover for the charging port & protection for the buttons. i got the fort blue & he got the black. they really don’t have many colors to choose from. the iphones get most of the colors & patterns. mostly in their symmetry line, which according to reviews is slippery to hold on to.

the defender comes with this holster thing to clip to your belt or pocket, but it’s kind of complicated to get the phone in & out. and the plastic seems cheap (otterbox has replacements on their site, so they know). and you’re supposed to use the clip as a stand so you can watch stuff on your phone somehow. they just have a basic picture instruction. my brother is just keeping it in his pocket, for now. he may get some kind of better holster later.
my pockets are too small for this (of course) so i got a small crossbody purse for it.

BTW how do women keep these things in their bras? Do they put it along the side, under a boob, or what?
