the royal house of winsor

it's an interesting 6-part documentary series i found on netflix about the current british royal family. finished it up and found out some things;
  • that there are parallels between QE 2 & queen victoria. both were pretty young wen they became queen (25 & 18, respectively) both married young foreigners that were considered hansom & dashing & both have long reins with troublesome princes of wales.
  • princess diana was such a....troublemaker(?) that there was great relief when she died. which doesn't help with the conspiracy theories surrounding her death.
  • louis mountbatten was really trying to be the power behind the scenes. he became mentor to prince chalrles & even tried to get charles & his grand daughter together so she could be queen one day.
  • everyone fears anything like edward VIII abdicating again. but given his (& wallis simpson's) nazi leanings, it's a good thing he did or WW2 might have turned out differently.
  • prince phillip did much to try to modernize the royal household.
  • he also pushed for a documentary on the royal family in the '60s to "humanize" them, but this opened the door for all of the tabloid gossip stuff that's followed.
  • charles is determined to go his own way. how this might impact the monarchy if/when he becomes king remains to be seen.
  • he wants to make the royal family "streamlined" with just the queen, prince, phillip, himself, his wife, will, kate & harry (& now, one presumes, his wife). to keep costs down & not have a big group of people mucking stuff up. his sister ann & brother edward have accepted this. andrew didn't for a while, but now seems to be on board.

overall it was enjoyable to watch & if you have an interest in the modern british royals, check it out. This entry was originally posted at https://archersangel.dreamwidth.org/238527.html. Please comment there using OpenID.
