The opposite of war isn't peace
It's creation.

Holy crap.
I've not read something as inspirational, rational, and applicable to my own life as this entry in a VERY long time. Thank you.

You've reclaimed the date as something beautiful, that's wonderful!
I agree with you about the "wallowing" quality that's going on. It's completely melodramatic and theatrical and feels very stagey and artificial to me. It just really rubs me the wrong way after the same people who are beating the drum for "never forget our heroes" just voted down the bill that would've helped first responders pay for their cancer treatments without torpedoing their whole family, economically.

Originally when Little John died, his anniversary was a moment of "pain of him gone". And while it's still there, the focus is now "life that had him in it". Which is tooootally different.

Respect without obsession. Due emotional response without showmanship. Little things. (laugh)

Frankly, I wonder at the motivations here.

Indeed. A moment in the sun to remind us why we need to have our library check-out history monitored, and to remember why we need to keep an occupying force in Iraq and Afghanistan, and why it is necessary for our own government to spy on us with minimal oversight.

Yes, I wonder about the motivations. /cynic
