Rating: PG-15
Warnings: Uh, nakedness? And Zel being an emo!golem.
Summary: Farewell is the hardest thing to say.
Notes: The prompt was "Zelgadis/Amelia: Farewell, romanticism - "I will always wait for you." I tried really really hard to get them to have sex, I swear. >.< They just wouldn't cooperate. So have some post-coital snuggling in that weird rating range somewhere between PG-13 and R. ;;;;

"You should come with me back to Seiruun."

Amelia's voice was hesitant, as though she'd been debating with herself for a long while over what to say.

Zelgadis looked over at her. She wasn't watching him, instead staring up at the ceiling. The sun was just beginning to set outside, the day's last rays sneaking in past the curtains to touch red highlights in her hair and make her eyes seem to glow. He swallowed, thinking for not the first time that day how truly beautiful she was. He took a deep breath and steeled his nerve. "Do you really think that would be a good idea, princess?"

He could see immediately how the title effected her. He'd never actually called her that before, let alone in this setting. Her eyes widened slightly, and she actually looked rather hurt. "Zelgadis..."

He shook his head, rolling over to face her and propping himself up on one elbow. "Amelia, you are a princess. You need to think of what's best for your people." Unspoken but hanging in the air between them was the fact that a golem wasn't it.

"But-" she was staring at him with those sad eyes of hers.

"No," he said, not quite as firmly as he meant to. "You deserve a prince charming. Not a monster."

"You're not!" she protested, reaching over to cup his cheek in her hand. The sheet slid down over her chest, and Zelgadis firmly resisted the urge to let his eyes travel downwards. "Daddy knows you," Amelia continued, her expression earnest. "He'd understand! You've saved Seiruun, and the world, just as often as Lina has!"

"But your people would still only see a golem," Zelgadis turned his head enough to gently kiss her palm. She started to protest, and he shook his head again. "Somewhere, there has to be a cure. When I find it, then I'll come back to Seiruun."

"But..." Amelia looked so sad, hand sliding up to run through his hair, thumb brushing lightly over his ear. "I love you just the way you are."

Zelgadis's heart thudded rather painfully in his chest, and he swallowed thickly. "I'm sorry. I can't stand it, the way I am now. I have to-"

"I understand," Amelia murmured, though clearly she did not. She pulled her hand away from his hair, but Zelgadis caught it in his before she could roll over away from him. She stared down at their clasped hands for a moment, then pulled away to roll over anyway. Zelgadis's heart sank, until he realized that she was rummaging around for something on the dressing table. After a moment, she sat up, scooting to put her back against the headboard. She pulled the sheet up over her chest, holding something clasped in her other hand. She offered it to Zelgadis, looking embarrassed. "Here," she looked into his eyes, holding his gaze. "I'll be waiting for you. Keep this so you remember where to come back to."

Zelgadis reached out, and she dropped the item into his hand. It was one of her bracelets, the one with the enchanted gem on it. Off-hand, Zelgadis couldn't remember ever seeing her without them. "I will," he promised solemnly. He was slightly too self-conscious to fasten the jeweled pink thing around his own wrist, but he sat up and then got out of bed to go tuck it into his pack where he knew it would be safe. "I'll think of you every time I see it."

"Good," Amelia was giving him a brave smile as he turned back around, but her eyes were watering suspiciously. Now that the danger to the world was past, she couldn't stay away from Seiruun much longer. She held her hand out to him again. "For now, come back to bed."

Smiling faintly, Zelgadis did as bid, crossing back to the bed. He gathered her into his arms, holding her close as he settled beside her. She laid her head against his shoulder, letting out a soft sigh. "I wish-"

"Shh," he tilted her head up, kissing her gently to quiet her. "Wishing won't change things. This is something I have to do."

"But why?" she whispered. "Isn't my love enough?"

"No," he murmured against her hair, thought it hurt his heart to say so. He held her just a little tighter. "I love you, Amelia. I want to be with you. But I can't, not like this."

"What if there is no cure?"

Zelgadis was quiet for a minute, stroking her hair. "...You'll see me again," he said finally. "I promise."

That seemed to be enough for her, at least for now. She tilted her head up enough to kiss his jaw, then rolled over to straddle his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I'd better," she whispered against his lips.

Zelgadis closed his eyes, wrapping his arms around her soft body.

For one last night, he would let let love be enough.
