He'd never meant to fall in love.
He was childish, in a way, because he'd never been given a chance to grow up properly. That was his flaw. He didn't know how to deal with people, because he'd never had to before. And he certainly had no experience with matters of the heart.
Oh, he'd loved Clow, of course he had. Clow was his creator, his companion. He'd loved Clow with all of his heart, but it had been more of an adoration than an actual romance.
But it had been real, and it hurt when Clow left them.
It hurt so bad...
For a long time after that, Yue hadn't been aware of much of anything. Even once Yukito came into being, Yue slept inside his mind. He was half aware that he'd been called from the Book, that the time he'd have to serve as Judge was coming closer, but he didn't want to wake. If he woke, he'd have to face reality. Clow was gone, he was alone now, and that hurt him in a way that he'd never had to deal with before. So like a child, he hid, letting Yukito deal with the outside world even though Yukito was unaware of the presence inside of him.
As he slept, only voices reached him, now and then.
Yukito's voice, much like his own, but kinder and gentler, soothing him back to sleep. Let me be real, it whispered. Sleep, Yue, I'll be your mask, I'm real enough for that.
Syaoran's voice, which was more than a voice. It was magic too, it always tugged Yue half awake with the familiarity of it. I'm kin of Clow, the magic whispered. I can feel you, inside this smiling mask.
Sakura's voice, bright with smiles and ringing with cheer. It made Yue ache with longing, the warmth and love that voice seemed to promise. She was not Clow, would never be Clow, but... Yue! her voice sang to him, even before she knew who he really was. Yue, come out! We can all be friends, I can help teach you to live!
And Touya's voice, though for a long time Yue didn't know the name that went with it. His voice was deeper, richer, and Yue could feel the difference between when Touya was talking to someone else and when Touya was talking to Yukito. I'll make you real, both of you. Even before he knew Yue existed. I won't let either one of you go.
And then he couldn't hide any longer.
As much as he tried to fight it, the Judgement had to come, and he had to perform it. Though he'd heard her voice, he was surprised to find that Kerberos had chosen a child as Clow's heir. Did any of them really think she could win?
"Yukito-san..."
That had made Yue angry for a long time. His false form was just that, false. How could she care so much for someone who was merely a facade?
But then the Judgement was over, and Yue began to understand.
He was awake all the time now, watching through Yukito's eyes, and Yukito was half-aware that he was there.
And Yue began to see that Yukito was real after all. The belief of other people had made him real. Yue hadn't expected that at all, hadn't expected Yukito to have a heart and mind of his own. And he certainly had a heart, Yue could feel it every time he looked at Touya, could see the answer in Touya's eyes.
I won't let you disappear...
Yue held out for a long time. He knew. He knew love hurt. He remembered loving Clow, and look how that had ended. Let Yukito do whatever he wanted, but Yue wanted no part of it at all.
But in the end, he wasn't given a choice.
"You really do resemble each other, Yuki and you."
Yue tried. He tried to tell himself that Touya only gave up his power for Yukito's sake. But he knew it wasn't true.
He and Yukito balanced each other. Not necessarily like the sun and moon, but like warm and cool, moonlight and moonshadow. It only made sense that their hearts beat in time. Love was such a grand thing, they couldn't differ if they tried.
And somehow, Touya knew and accepted that.
In the end, when Touya fell asleep and wouldn't wake, Yue felt the pain as keenly as Yukito did. Both of them fought with all their might to help Sakura win, because neither of them could live without Touya anymore. He'd told Yuki once that the moments they spent together were real.
Yue disagreed, but only a little. The moments they spent together, the three of them, were warm.
He knew the difference, now, between infatuation and love.
Clow's death had nearly crippled his heart, but he had let it. For Touya, he would fight.
No more hiding, no more running.
In this, he and Yuki were in perfect agreement.
