It took her awhile, but eventually Sophie noticed somethin odd was happening in the Wastes.
Howl found her out on one of the balconies, leaning over the railing as she looked down through the clouds, wind ruffling her silver hair. "Sophie?"
She glanced up and smiled at him. "Come look at this."
Obligingly, he joined her at the railing and peered downward. "What am I looking at?"
Sophie waved vaguely at the ground far below them. "Aren't we over the Wastes?"
"Yes..." Howl nodded, not sure what she was getting at.
"Well, it's not... waste-like anymore."
Howl blinked, and looked again. She was right, the ground far below them was green, splashed with the bright colors of blooming flowers. "You're right, it's blooming again."
"I wonder why that is...?"
Howl smiled at her. "It's because the Witch of the Wastes doesn't have this place under her power anymore, so it's returning to the way it used to be."
"Oh!" Sophie nodded thoughtfully. "I see. That makes sense." She peered down through the clouds a moment longer, then turned to Howl with an impish smile on her face. "Can we take a closer look?"
Howl grinned, feeling his heart melt under that smile. He reached up to brush his fingers through her silver hair, then took her hand. "Of course."
He picked her up, and she laughed happily and wrapped her arms around his neck. Howl vaulted easily over the railing and into blue skies.
