A/N: @_@ I knew I should have done more writing a month ago, now I'm scrambling to finish these up and study for mid-terms... Anyway, I decided to take this idiom in a more literal sense, because I could.

Azkaban is hell.
He knows this, the few times he's awake enough to think.
There are no human guards here, only Dementors, and Dementors cannot see. So he spends a lot of time as Padfoot, huddled in the corner of his cell.
Padfoot keeps him sane, because as a dog his mind is simpler, the Dementors don't affect him as much. He doesn't have to keep staring at James' death mask when he's Padfoot.
When he's coherent enough to think, he listens to the wind.
Even here, even half-crazy, even as Padfoot, he remembers the moon. He doesn't remember exactly why the moon is important, but he knows it is. So he spends the full moon nights with his nose pressed to the tiny window that brings fresh air into his cell, staring at the moon.
He can hear howling on the wind, and though he can't remember why, that makes him very sad.
