The Problem With Fan Fiction (1/?)

Part 1

‘Did you honestly think I wouldn’t find out about this filth?’ Miranda spat into the phone. Emily who was coming up on her third year working for Miranda actually squeaked and stared wide-eyed at Nigel.

‘Well firstly good morning gorgeous, how are you do…’

‘Oh don’t play coy with me Andrea; I accepted your slight obsession with writing that rubbish because I used to love you but to…’

‘Wait! What? Miranda… used to?’

‘Stop interrupting me and yes do you think I honestly have space in my heart for someone who could have betrayed my trust as badly as you have done. No, expect the divorce papers on your desk by Monday, That’s all.’ After hanging up the phone, then disconnecting the landline and turning her phone off she leaned back in her chair placing her hand over her eyes. ‘Emily’. The scurrying of feet reminding her of how Andrea had smiled at her every time she was called. No that line of thought is unacceptable. How could she have been so stupid? How could she have…

‘Yes Miranda.’

Miranda glared. ‘Call Leslie, call my lawyer, Andrea is not allowed anywhere near me or my children and where is my Starbucks?’

‘On its way Miranda’

‘And Emily’

Gulp ‘yes Miranda’.

‘I want that insipid little website shut down.’

‘Certainly, which one?’

The glare she received was answer enough. Miranda was damned if she was going to allow anyone within a five mile radius of her to be happy when she herself had just had her heart cut out. So much for pancakes always being the start to a great day.

The previous evening

‘Andrea really, I don’t know how you can stand to read that stuff.’ Miranda said smirking at the indignant look on her lovers face.

'This... stuff'? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your bookshelf and you select... I don't know... that insanely thick tome, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care for frivolous stories. But what you don't know is that that tome is not just written by anyone, he was not a child born writing bestsellers. He had to learn his talent and develop it. He is most probably a former fan fiction writer. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 1966, Jean Rhys wrote and published a fan fiction based on Jane Eyre. And then I think it was C.S Lewis... wasn't it who adopted elements from JRR Tolkiens book and wrote a novel? And then fan fiction writing quickly become widely practiced and has been written and read by thousands of people. And then it, uh, filtered down through to the publishing houses who picked up on this talent and these now bestselling authors write books which eventually trickle on down into some bookstore where you, no doubt, paid an obscene amount for that copy. However, that book represents millions of aspiring writers dreams and countless hours of enjoyment and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fan fiction craze when, in fact, you're reading a book that was written for you by someone who no doubt once wrote fan fiction.’ Andy said finishing with a wink and carefully placing her laptop down so she could fully appreciate the look of surprise on her loves face.

‘Oh you cheeky girl’ Miranda said sharply with sparkling eyes ‘you are lucky I am tired and too cold to sleep alone otherwise you would have found yourself without a bed or a girlfriend.’

Laughingly Andrea kisses Mirandas nose ‘Oh honey we know its mostly because we know you love my chocolate pancakes so much more than you would ever admit, now come lets sleep’. Snuggling down she pulls her pouting love down into the warm confines of her arms sighing. Yes this was what she lived for, these little moments.

------
‘Morning beautiful’

‘mmmm… Andrea what time is it?’

‘a little after six, enough time for me to thoroughly love you’ this statement was accompanied by a quick swipe of a tongue across her nipple.

Miranda groaned ‘I can’t; I have a meeting with Irv scheduled for eight.’ Struggling to untangle herself from the woman who seemed to have suddenly grown five limbs and the stubborn wish to never let go.

‘Are you seriously choosing Irv Ravitz over me? I mean I know he has hot man boobs and he is the perfect height for…’

‘Andrea!’

Laughing Andrea tweaked a nipple and bit her shoulder. ‘You know you wanna’.

‘I need to go get dressed’

Andrea trails her fingers down Mirandas’ taut stomach. ‘I’ll do that thing you love’

‘He will cut my budget again; however will I be able to rent tigers for the Valentino shoot? Oh Andrea!’

‘I’ll make you pancakes.’

‘Okay but this better be quick and I demand low fat cream.’

‘Perfect’

Kissing her way down Mirandas stomach Andrea looked up into her eyes. ‘You know what; I don’t think I will ever be able to live without this ever again.’

‘Well you rather a bit of a sex maniac.’

‘No, I mean being with you, being able to hold you. In your arms I feel like I am home. You are perfect and I can’t imagine a life without you. You are my heaven.’

‘And you are mine, no for gods sakes Andrea either stop playing down there or redouble your efforts. Time, surprisingly, does not wait for Miranda Priestly.’

‘Yes ma’am.’

By
the time they had eventually made it down for breakfast there was a flurry of activity, two children and a dog were loudly eating what looked like every cereal available.

‘Finally! Gees you guys took forever.’ One red head loudly exclaimed.

‘Yea mom, by the way I think you need to make your walls soundproof.’ Came the second smirking red heads reply.

‘Cassidy, we are adults and do not need to answer to you about our sleeping times, and Caroline, that was a highly inappropriate comment.’ A blushing Miranda lightly reprimanded.

‘What do you mean? I was just saying that you snored.’ Came the quick quip, followed by a series of giggles.

‘Okay that’s enough girls, your mother is well on her way to resembling a tomato and we already have two tomato heads in the family.’

‘Hey!’ came the unison reply joined by a bark.

Laughing Andy ruffled their heads. ‘Right who wants pancakes’? Three hands went up, one albeit more conservatively than the rest, no less eager nonetheless. ‘I thought so; a day can never be bad when it starts with pancakes and…’ Andrea winked at a blushing Miranda.

‘Eewww! Andy!’

With a smile Miranda nuzzled her loves neck. ‘I love you, forever and always’.
