Bruce usually wasn't allowed to attend Grown Up Parties. His Mother said he wouldn't like them, anyway, so he always stayed home with Alfred, though he sneaked peaks at the people dancing, drinking and talking when the parties were at the Manor. Mother was right in a sense, it didn't seem like it would be very fun to be there, but Bruce liked to watch people from the top of the stairs. Grown Ups usually didn't mean what they said or meant other things instead and did things that got them further away from what they really wanted, like that man who tried to be funny and made other people angry or that woman who was really nice to other men but wanted her husband to pay more attention to her.

Bruce didn't really get them, but he thought that if he looked more at them, someday he would understand. Mother said it was a matter of time, and that she almost hoped he never would, so he would stay her busy little Bee forever.

Bruce wasn't going to be a little Bee forever. He was going to grow up, and then he was going to tell people to stop being silly and everyone would make more sense then.

Tonight, Alfie had a cold, and Leslie was out of town, and Mother couldn't find a Nanny on time, so Bruce had to come to the Party, but he had to promise to be really good and be nice to people and not ask things that would embarrass his Father, and not play on the floor and not fall asleep on the coat room. Bruce was a big boy and he didn't need to be told those things, but Father always wanted to make sure he would behave.

Miss Clarissa was hosting the party, and she thought he was adorable and showed him where the entrees were, so he could pick something up. Bruce didn't like Grown Up Parties food, but he tried to be polite and picked up a small brochette. Alfred taught him all kinds of names for Grown Up Party food, and Bruce thought it was all very silly. It was just food, and the names weren't even in English.

He walked around the hall, trying to stay away from people and looking for his Father. Mother wanted him to come say hello to Mr. Drake, so there went the Gray Ghost in a secret mission to alert his Father of a visitor who carried Big News about the Jewels of the Crown.

"Bruce! Come over here, son." His Father compromised his position, so the Gray Ghost stepped forward. No use to hide now. "Where is your Mother? Mr. Scott here would love to see her."

Bruce looked at his shoes. No wonder his Father had heard him coming, these shoes were terribly noisy. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Scott," Bruce said politely in his Big Boy voice. "Mother is with Mr. Drake, Father. She wants you to greet him too."

"Nice to meet you too, young man."

Bruce raised his eyes to meet the tall blond man's, his voice familiar. "I know you," Bruce said, a big smile on his lips. He tried to keep his composure. "I've seen you before."

"Really?" Mr. Scott asked, a kind smile on his lips.

"You don't know Mr. Scott, Bruce. You must be confusing him," his Father intervened.

"No, I know him. I saw him with Tommy in Metropolis once."

His Father frowned, and Bruce knew he was in trouble. "When did this happen, young man?"

"The day.. uh.. the day I didn't stay by the car," he confessed shamefully, but the presence of Mr. Scott was too exciting. "You were fighting a villain! Tommy and I chased after you."

"I'm sorry Alan. Bruce has a hyperactive imagination," his Father apologized for him. Bruce frowned. He wasn't lying. Grown Ups never said what they meant, but Bruce did.

Mr. Scott crouched, smiling at Bruce’s Father. "It's okay, Thomas. He has to make up for the dull party somehow." His Father turned around to look for his Mother and asked Mr. Scott to wait for him for a moment, and the blond turned back to Bruce.

"I'm not lying," Bruce said.

"I know, Bruce. So you saw me fighting?"

"Yeah! You were great! I told Tommy we should go back but then we saw you and there was a lot of broken glass and then we ran back to the Hotel," he told him in a rush, leaving out the part about being grounded afterwards.

"I see. You have to be careful if you're going to be chasing superheroes, Bruce. I'm... surprised to have you recognize me."

"Is it a secret? I can keep a secret."

Mr. Scott laughed. "Yes, son. It's a big secret. You promise to keep it?" Mr. Scott held out his hand and Bruce shook it, delighted.

"Promise, Mr. Scott."

"Great. Let's go find your Father."

Bruce held onto Green Lantern's hand -Mr. Scott, he said to himself- and went to find his Mother. Grown Up Parties weren't as boring as his Mother had said.
