Thanks to merfilly and pervyficgirl, I now have a Steph/Mia. Lalalaaa, I can think of a couple of stories I want to tell about them, but I need to finish the SS claims! so I will get to them later.

In any case, here it is. Not beta'ed, all mistakes are mine, as usual, point them out and I shall fix them :)

Title: The Brave and The Bold
Fandom: DCU
Rating: G
Pairing: Steph+Mia
Word count: 811
AN: Set during Quiver, with the slight difference that instead of sending Spoiler home, Batman sends her to look after Mia while he’s cavorting with Ollie.

The Brave and the Bold

“That looks tough.”

The voice in the shadows startled Mia and she dropped the arrow. Her eyes went wide as she saw the third cape -the *third*- of the night. All her life, she had never seen one of the masked crowd, and tonight she had seen three.

Her life was definitely taking a turn toward the exciting.

The silhouette came out from the shadows and she frowned. She wasn’t familiar with the purple hooded girl that was walking towards her, and she felt a little ashamed. Third cape she saw tonight and she couldn’t recognize it? That wasn’t very polite.

She cleared her throat. “It’s a lot harder than it seems,” she said, tentatively, waving the bow a little. “My back is going to kill me tomorrow.”

“Oh, I know how the burn kind of sucks. That bow is kind of big for you, though. Is it Green Arrow’s?”

Mia tried to fight rising an eyebrow at the caped girl. Was the vigilante trying to make small talk with her?

“Yeah, it’s his. I was having a very frustrating night and thought a workout might help.” Mia paused, narrowing her eyes at the stranger. “You wouldn’t, by any chance, know where Green Arrow is, would you?”

“Green Arrow is hanging out with the boss. I’m sorry, I should have told you that earlier.” The hood obscured the masked features of her visitor, but the sheepish awkward body language told the story the mask obscured.

“The boss?”

“Uhm, yeah, Batman? The spooky guy with bat-ears and cool gadgets?”

“You work for Batman? That’s really cool!”

Mia wasn’t sure she expected one of Batman’s associates to giggle, but that was exactly what the other girl was doing. “Oh, yeah, Batman is way cool. A riot of a guy.” The vigilante laughed again, and took a second to compose herself. “Well, yes. Working with Batman is cool when he’s not being an ass. I’m Spoiler, by the way.”

“I’m Mia.” She didn’t know if she should extend a hand or something, so she crouched to pick up the arrow she had dropped earlier. “You’re the third cape I see tonight, you know. You guys totally kick ass.”

Spoiler sat over a low wall, and Mia could hear the smile on the other girl’s voice. “That we do.” Spoiler said as she re-arranged her cape around her. “Who else came over, can you tell me? I should let the boss know.”

“Black Canary and Arsenal, how cool is that? Real superheroes on my doorstep, talking to me like I’m someone. Awesome.”

Spoiler made a move towards her earpiece and stopped mid air. “Talking to you like you’re someone? Why wouldn’t they? You’re someone. You’re Mia. Everyone is someone. You can’t let their egos get to you, you know? Otherwise you’ll end up thinking you don’t matter.” She finished reaching for her earpiece and her voice changed into a deeper, slightly more nasal pitch. “B, this is Spoiler. Black Canary and Arsenal were here before me, you might get company soon.”

Mia didn’t hear the reply, but Spoiler continued after a brief pause. “Roger that, boss. Ten-four and all that.”

Mia looked at the vigilante for a moment, worrying her lower lip. “You’re one of them, you don’t understand. You’re doing something… bigger. Something important. I’m just some girl trying not to be scared.”

Spoiler jumped down from her perch and walked towards Mia, who couldn’t bare to look at her anymore. The thrill of meeting the masks was suddenly diminished by her looming reality. Spoiler reached out and one gloved hand took her chin gently.

“You’re as important as any of us, and believe me, I understand. I’m just trying to do the right thing while pretending I’m not terrified out of my mind half the time.” Her voice wasn’t the pitch she had used to talk with Batman, but what Mia thought was her normal voice. “If you want to hear a secret, I think all of them are trying not to be scared. The boss is a really scary man, but all he really wants is to help others so they won’t be as scared as he is. And he’s the goddamn Batman, you know.”

Mia smiled. “You’re ruining his reputation here.”

“Oh, whatever. Men are very silly,” Steph shrugged.

Mia shifted, thoughtfull. “You really think I could be someone? That I could… make a difference?”

“Sister, you would kick some serious ass.”

Mia grinned. “I would like that.” Spoiler took a couple of steps back, and Mia couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed in the air. “Maybe you can teach me some moves later.”

“You bet. We could start our own girls-only super-team; teach the Titans how it’s done.”

The tone the other girl’s voice told Mia that she wasn’t really joking, and she could barely help herself from hugging her.

Her life had definitely taken a turn towards the exciting tonight.
