Oh, my, WOW! This is so very beautiful and painful and haunting that I don't even know how to leave truly coherent feedback. So many careful, poignant insights and gorgeous details.
I love and admire the way you've worked the canon in for so many different, important moments of late--very, very impressive and it comes out so seamlessly--it's lovely. I, in fact, would now prefer to see all canon filtered through stories by you. I really don't think that's too much to ask! ;)
I also love your shifting points of view--well done work. I particularly like the beginning, with Dick watching Clark, so tightly controlled and obviously grieving but keeping his pain so private, as he does all the way through.
I also liked--and just b/c I think I ought to say so, I don't care for Damian or what he seems to represent--to me--to the Bat story (perhaps I'll be wrong about what he represents) aaaaanyway, you did a great job with him, and I liked watching Dick and Clark team up as Batman and Superman from his pov. (And I really don't like the kid in canon, so that's HUUUUGE! :) I really, really liked the way Dick and Clark came across there too.
The Blackest Night part was fantastic--just perfect, and really caught the mood and feeling of the source story, while still staying true to the rest of the story. I don't know how you did that!
And Clark and Alfred. Heartbreaking and horrible and gritty and real. That was perfect to include. It's... it's like--I don't even know how to say what it's like right now. I'll have to think about it and process more. But it's kind of like the really creepy, poignant part a good Frankenstein story, if that makes sense. The gore, for want of a better word, that goes with death. And Clark and Alfred's practicality--facing terrible things because of their grief, and to honor Bruce, and to save others from having to face the horror and because they owe it to Bruce. Gah. Fantastic. The dental detail really got me, too.
And the ending! The static, weaving it's way in and out, watching Bruce try to make sense of things, watch Clark--that was an amazing job, writing from that pov and you did it perfectly! It's just--WOW. It's kind of heartbreaking! You can see the edges of him mending, though. I'm so glad he has Superman to help him!
In short, beautiful, incredibly haunting journey through grief of loss to discovery and rediscovery.
FYI, just in case I wasn't clear: I don't mean, when I say 'What Damian represents to the Bat-story' what he reps in THIS story at all. I'm talking about what I think Grant Morrison thinks about what Damian is in the Giant Story of Bruce Wayne and the Robins. I actually like what he reps in this story. So I like your story better than canon, is what I'm saying. Much, much.
LOL! thank youuu! I am looking forward to Damian's story clarifying in comics, I really love how in Batman #666 he feels so inadequate because he can't possibly be as good as Bruce or Dick as Batman. Bats have inadequacy issues, no matter where they come from! I hope the future of #666 is not.. like, the real future, but a version of it, because I would love if the Batfamily eventually pulled together and managed to change Gotham -not that the fight would ever end, but... I want Gotham to be better! ...now I want to write future fic, lol. But yes! I hope Damian gets a good story. One where he's not there to be the Ultimate Robin, but.. just the latest addition to a clan that seems to have problems to stop growing :P Also, I am DYING for him to take in Helena Kyle as an apprentice/surrogate sister. BATXCAT FOREVER.
Eeeeee!! thank you thank you! :D :D I'm so glad you liked it, I'm sorry I'm late to reply! (am I ever not late catching up with LJ? dang!) I had so much fun weaving canon scenes and finding moments for Clark to mourn! LOL, I will do my best to filter more canon through my slash goggles! :P
I'm glad you liked the shifting POVs! they were giving me a headache -especially Alfred's! it's not an easy POV, that man- but I tried to keep outside Clark's head because everything I've written lately is from Clark's POV and.. sometimes I loose sight of the character doing the narrations because I forget how others see him. It was fun! (except for writing Black Mask's necrophilia, that was weird and kind of creepy).
I am very very happy you liked Damie here! he's such a brat, I can't help but love him -I really want him to be Dick's Robin to the point that when Bruce comes back Damian *wants* to go with Dick wherever Dick decides to go- and I'm happy you liked him here despite not liking him in canon! that's high praise, and I am so happy! :D
I had a hard time with Alfred and Clark's piece because it was so... well, horrifying! But like you say, they will honor Bruce's memory -and their own grief- by saving others from having to face such terrible moments. Alfred would save Dicik and Damian the pain of the autopsy, and Clark would save them all the pain of another burial. Because.. that's what we do for the people we love! I am so happy you liked the dental record bit! lol, it was one of my favorite details X)
Thank youuu for the wonderful feedback!! :D :D it totally made my day!! :D here's to Bruce returning to us soon!
