I have a lot of fun playing with Damian's alienation, how.. self contained he is in some ways. He lacks a frame of reference for 'normal' life in Gotham! I was reading earlier this morning an article about how different cultures interpret facial expressions in different ways -which makes sense, given that there is no such thing as a global non-verbal language- so I think that he can read fighting because that's the language he learned. Occidental -specifically, American- non verbals must be very cryptic! Even if he was raised speaking English instead of learning it as a second tongue -which.. I am not sure he would have been- he would have been brought up in a completely different cultural background, given the power structures and cult-like organization of the Demon. I try to keep his forms of speech consistent but I faaailll, lol.
I think Damian would have been raised to very strict rules, specially the rule of the strong and the fittest, so I think mostly his problem is not that he can't negotiate ethical quandaries, but that he has a completely different result in mind from what Dick or Alfred or Bruce have in mind, and expressing those informal cultural agreements is really hard, so no one can explain what he is doing wrong or why what they are doing is right beyond knowing that they are right and he is wrong. He doesn't have a bedrock of a normal childhood to fall back, so there's no way for him to extrapolate a lot of 'normal' values. Poor boy needs someone who can help him make sense of life beyond Demon!
I love writing how what Damian sees as weaknesses can be Dick's strengths! he is such a fun unreliable narrator! I think he'll eventually pick some stuff by himself and other things maybe he'll get explained once someone notices what Damian is missing and he's comfortable enough to allow other to teach him.. he's a deadly woobie, but a very young and lonely woobie anyway! :(
