I have been playing around with xgl and beryl on linux and I have to say that they kick the visual effects in vista's arse. My desk tops are on a transparent 3D cube which rotates to select a given desktop, minimising windows causes them to catch fire and burn to ashes, geeky but very cool!! linux may take a bit more work but considering it is free and better than vista I have to say it is a better option
