sirius/andie

Sirius appeared with a pop, and followed his nose. It led him to a
kitchen filled with hearty smells and childish laughter. He poked his
head in just as his niece plopped onto the floor, dizzy from spinning
around the room. Their eyes met, and he barely stopped her squeal of
delight by raising a finger to his lips, which were curled up with
mischief. She giggled quietly as Sirius tiptoed behind his cousin,
who was humming a tune as she stirred a pot.

Andromeda hummed happily as she cooked dinner. Ted wasn't going to be home
tonight - he had to work late and wouldn't be back until after nine at the
earliest. Andie didn't mind. She enjoyed the evenings she spent with her
daughter. She was currently in the living room, giggling at something.
Andromeda assumed she was playing with some of her toys.

"But who knows where or when..." she sang the last line of one of her
favorite songs as she stirred a pot of berries for some jam. Dinner would be
ready soon and she would finish the jars after dinner.

Andromeda wiped her hands on a cloth, and as she raised one to tuck a
strand of hair behind her ear, Sirius took it and spun her around
right into a waltzing position. She gasped; he winked; they began to
dance.

"Don't stop singing on my account. It's what I cam here for," Sirius
grinned. "Well, besides the food."

"Sirius!" she said in surprise, and then breaking into a huge smile. She had
taught him how to dance when they were younger, and she was surprised at how
good he was. She began a new song.

"I'd work for you, I'd slave for you, I'd be a beggar or a knave for you. If
that isn't love, it's going to have to do, until the real thing comes
along..."

She sang softly, remembering the old Muggle song she had heard once.

"Are you hungry?" she asked, stopping her singing but continuing to sway in
the kitchen. "Ted's got work late, and I made lots of food."

"Could eat a horse," he replied, dipping her slightly. "Or a little
girl," he added, raising his voice a notch.

They laughed at the little yelp that came from Nymphadora just as she
slipped under the dining table.

Sirius looked perplex. "Now where did my dinner go," he wondered
aloud, as he bowed his thanks to Andie and began to pace the kitchen.
"I can smell a right tasty treat nearby…and I seem to be getting
closer…" Sirius crouched down in front of where his niece's foot was
sticking out from underneath the tablecloth.

"Could it be…here!" Sirius took hold of Nymphadora's ankle and pulled
her out, kicking and giggling. "There is no escape from my clutches!"
he declared, mock-biting her head and taking pink hair into his mouth.

Andie gracefully spun out of Sirius' arms and over to the stove to finish
dinner. She laughed as he chased after her little daughter; Nymphadora was
giggling like mad.

"Sirius, could you please pour some milk for her? There's glasses on the
table already."

Andromeda took three dishes out of the cupboard and put roast beef, mashed
potatoes, and stuffing on each of them. She flicked her wand casually and
gravy started ladeling itself into a dish and floated to the table on its
own accord.

"Here you go," she said with a smile, setting the dishes on the table.
"How've you been Sirius?"

"I've been alright," he replied, setting down in a chair between two
of the few leading ladies in his life. "Been busy, I suppose you
could say, though not with work. Dumbledore hasn't assigned us to
much of late, most likely to give us a break on account of James and
Lily's engagement. Cor, that's still a bit odd to say, innit. I
doubt it'll last for much longer, but the down time's been a nice
change of pace. Given me a bit of time to myself, which led to a lot
of thinking."

He looked over at his wide-eyed niece, who seemed to be hanging onto
his every word. "Don't look so surprised," he pouted. "I am capable,
you know, thinking and that."

Nymphadora tilted her head. "Sure," she quipped, the picture of
innocence as she dipped her finger in her mashed potatoes and sampled
it.

Sirius rounded on Andromeda. "Oh, her wit, how it scorns! She had to
take after you, didn't she?" He looked back at Nymphadora, who was
beaming at him angelically. "That look won't work on me anymore,
Nymph."

She bounced in her seat at the name.

Andromeda rolled her eyes but didn't say anything at Sirius' pet name.

"Well, I'm glad you've had a bit of a chance to relax," she said, taking her
daughter's plate and cutting up her meat for her before handing it back.

"Listen, I've been wanting to ask you..." she started, looking her cousin
directly in the eyes. "Are you going to Narcissa's wedding?" She had been
thinking about it ever since she said she'd come, and she would feel a lot
better if Sirius was going too.

"I just... would feel more comfortable if you were there too."

"Of course I am. I've got a great disguise that's perfect for the
occasion. Actually, I've been wanting to show it to you for a while
now but I've just never gotten around to it. It'll be a surprise,
then," he grinned. "Besides, I've got to see this Malfoy bloke for
myself, haven't I? Give him the old 'you make her cry, I castrate
you' speech. Perhaps I'll ask him about the hair, too. I mean,
really, what kind of message is he trying to-"

"What's a castrate?" Nymphadora tilted her head as she waited for an answer.

Andromeda almost burned a hole through Sirius' head.

Sirius looked at her calmly. "That's when your uncle Siwi takes his
wand and blasts off your future uncle Lucifer's wa-"

"SIRIUS!" Andromeda shrieked, reaching a hand over and covering his mouth.
"I'll leave Ted before I have you teach those things to my daughter." She
shook her head and removed her hand, going back to her dinner.

"Do you really think it's wise to say anything to Lucius? I mean, what if my
mother sees you? Or worse, your mother. I don't know how I'm going to hide.
I'll probably sit in the back behind some decorations or something..."

She shook her head, feeling a headache coming on. She wanted to attend her
sister's wedding, but it was causing her a lot of grief.

"Stop playing with your food," Andie reprimanded Nymphadora as she swirled
her finger in her gravy.

Immediately, Nymphadora's hair turned blue as she sulkily started
using her spoon.

"If they see me, they'll likely have a coronary, which is fine in my
book. They can do what they want. Live and let live, yeah? As for
Lucius, somebody needs to let him know he can't mess around with any
Black, and I've got to do it as I doubt Regulus could let go of mum's
hand long enough to do anything useful."

Sirius then turned to Nymphadora, and his eyes softened as he looked
at her shimmering curls. "I like that colour," he commented quietly.

"You're always so brave like that," Andie said with a sigh. "I don't know if
I could face Mother. She'll think I'm coming to crawl back to her and admit
what a bad husband Ted is."

Andromeda poured herself a glass of wine and filled Sirius' glass as well.

"I'm just nervous I suppose."

"Don't worry," Sirius smiled. "I'll be with you."
