There is very few reasons to keep nukes around. Aliens, asteroids and outbreaks are the most likely scenario for a productive use of a nuclear weapon. Aliens are unlikely, and there are more productive ways to deal with an outbreak so that leaves us with asteroids. Asteroids are a pain in the ass because we can't see them with any sort of regularity. They are sneaky and bad news so we need some way to get these things before they get us and nukes are probably the best weapon for the job.
Now one of the criticisms of using a nuke is that the asteroid will break apart and cause greater destruction. But wouldn't smaller pieces be easier to nuke?
Here is my suggestion:
Step 1: Nuke it.
Step 2: Nuke the pieces.
Step 3: Nuke the pieces of those pieces.
Step 4: Nuke anything that is left.
Step 5: Celebrate with Aerosmith.
