It is an interesting show! I actually thought the second episode was much stronger than the first (and included no mention of the NeedWant. I cannot say this is more than a coincidence, but there you go).
I am still curious to see whether the writers figure out what to do in the next few episodes. It's entirely possible that they'll manage the plots - the second episode took a huge step back and slowed way down to focus more on cultural conflicts between the aliens and humans living in Defiance, which helped SO MUCH in terms of keeping my interest and limited the amount of eye-rolling I did. It's nowhere near perfect, but if the writers keep up the vibe of the second episode, it might end up being a worthwhile show.
Jury's still out on the prostitution side of things, as the whole business wasn't even mentioned in the second episode. I mostly worry that it exists solely as an appeal to the lowest common denominator and is there as sex for sex's sake, or sex for the sake of showing how "adult" and/or "edgy" the show is. Because ooh, alien sex! THAT PUSHES THE ENVELOPE SO FAR.
I also worry they'll throw in an "eff yeah feminism" vibe solely because the proprietor of the establishment is a woman. Because that makes the show progressive somehow? IDK. I think there are ways to do all of the above quite well, but I highly doubt the show will ever DO anything with it except use it as a vehicle to show sex on TV.
