It's not like a magician telling somebody how they do a trick, right? I know magicians won't tell you how they manage a sleight-of-hand, but I suppose it would be rather different if you actually did magic.

But if you have to make a focal point, don't you need to be able to do magic already? But if I don't know if I can, wouldn't I still not know if I could if I couldn't make a focal point?

It doesn't have to be made by the sorcerer. My apprentice did not make his own either; it was already made for him.
