The nice part about being a (sometimes-sorta) observant Jew is that we already got our New Years... last week!
I think we've all had enough of this year, huh?
This weekly natural disaster thing is sccccccary.
We actually celebrate New Years four times.
Once because we use a lunar calendar (we are a people of the moon... explains a lot)
Then there's the New Years for the trees (which is why the Hasidic Jews stand on street corners in NY once a year, inviting people to shake a wheat stock, and a gourd with them. On Yom Kippur, devout Jews wear white linens. See where I'm goin' with this?)
There's one for when the Torah runs out and they have to unroll the entire scroll and roll it back up. (and celebrate by throwing hard candy.) There's the New Years for the charity and animals too.
Anyway, on this particular New Years we say "Slichot" which means "sorry"... and we also say...
L'shana tova l'tikku tevu. Have a happy (and sweet) New Year and may you be inscribed in the book of life.
