Huh...

I read a article on Somewthing Awful, about spoilers, and the person says his views on the whole subject. It is exactly the same as my view on spoilers. Take a look.

Since the invention of fiction some time ago by our ancient grandpas, people have longed to escape into its wondrous imaginary worlds. ( Read more... )

The guy doesn't exactly contradict himself... at least, not in any major way that you or I wouldn't do. He's saying he doesn't go out of his way to spoil things for others, but he has on occasion. And he says that people who enjoy the reactions they get from it are jerks, and that he's enjoyed the reactions he got - I don't think he'd say 'no' if you asked him if he was a jerk.

He's also not being an entitlement whore. He's actually saying that the people he's complaining about are entitlement whores, in that they expect everything they see on TV or on the Internet or everything they read to be pristine and pure and unspoiled, when sometimes it just can't be helped.

What the guy who wrote this rant-thing is being is one-sided, in that he doesn't recognize the other side's argument, and doesn't even acknowledge the people who don't like spoilers but aren't the 'whining babies' he talks about. He's not mentioning the fact that sometimes, someone just doesn't want to know the big plot twist so they can find that part out on their own, and they really don't care about the little things in between, and if scene 4 of act 6 gets spoiled for them, provided it's not the major plot twist, it's not really going to ruin the movie/book/play/whatever for them.

The part about intentions is right. If someone does it on accident or does it without thinking, it's annoying but shouldn't be any huge source of aggravation. If it's done intentionally, like the assholes that scream out who kills Dumbledore at the book's release, then it's worth getting angry over.

As for everyday stuff, sometimes a disclaimer of "OH, I watched this episode, wanna know what happens?" or "OMG, this movie sucks, let me tell you about it," is all that's needed, so the person can politely decline if they're particularly interested in the subject matter and don't want the ending ruined.

And yeah, they all die in the end. But sometimes you just wanna see the progression yourself, without knowing who dies first.
